Thankfully MSE forum members, their homes, households and lifestyles are rather more diverse than you imagine! :p "Most people" I know IRL do not want or need a wet-and-dry cleaner, nor a coffee pod machine nor a smart home gadget.

Nineteen of the twenty two Which? Best Buy cordless vacuum cleaners are Dyson or Bosch. I plumped for a Dyson (V7, £250 online) for the ease of switching attachments and previous experience of their vacuums ....

Eight years ago my mother and I purchased Dysons (upright and cylinder respectively) simultaneously. £100 each in the sale thanks to MSE. That Dyson cylinder is still going strong, just too much for me this summer.

Twenty five years ago my (ex) husband insisted on the original upright Dyson (DC01) for our first home. £200 was a lot of money back then, but that thing earned my grudging respect. Vain? :rotfl: He is a geek actually.

The DC01 motored through a heavy build up of dog fur/ cat fur/ fleas courtesy of the previous occupant, handled my gardening addiction, our mogsters and a full renovation. That Dyson was still going strong when we split up seven years later.

You can save money using a mop, bucket and carpet sweeper on your floors. Or by sharing weekly baths with each member of your household (my poor Grandad was always last in  ).

I just don't think the quality is there anymore to justify the price - the grey DC07 was the sweet spot, I had two of those. We do have a very dirty house though :)

The suction is so much better on the vax I bought than any dyson I've owned, but it is a trade off for design/capacity. We have a dyson handheld as well (older model), its okay but nothing special.

I did buy a cheap shark - the one with the light on it. Absolutely terrible cleaner. I do seem to own a lot of cleaners!

I know there was a good period of time when Dyson was caught up and lapped by competitors. And that the predecessor (DC19) of my £100 cylinder (DC19T2) was right in there.

I had two of the cheapest, nastiest cylinders in quick succession before that. One was Tesco Value with a reusable (not washable) cloth bag that never actually emptied yet covered me in filth each week. :rotfl:

On trying to guesstimate the model of my mother's upright Dyson, I read that the DC19 replaced the DC08 so perhaps ours were on the downward slide after your high? She was very pleased with it (then mostly carpeted apartment).

I had half an idea to loan my mother my Dyson cordless for a week, then have her buy a Bosch cordless so we can compare Which Best Buys. Wouldn't be that hard: she cherishes her Bosch appliances they serve her faithfully in return.

My mother will LOVE the light weight and pick up on her (now mostly hard) floors, plus but not the small bin on the V7. If you have a busy/ dirty house I can imagine you'd be emptying the bin constantly.

Presumably the early cordless models were intended as an 'extra' vacuum? Still a bit of a trek emptying the bin if your house is long and thin or on several floors. Suppose that is the cleaning lady's problem for many customers! :p

I bought the Dyson V7 Animal, but wasn't amazed initially. The mini upholstery head is too 'enthusiastic' on my shiny new sofa for comfort! :o Plus the regular motorhead chases bigger bits around the laminate.

Forked out for the fluffy head and :iloveyou: It's like some magical dustbunny fairy reminding me why I do not need another cat.

  • Have a look on the Dyson ebay outlet - I got a v6 from there for £139 and it's great for what it cost. http://www.ebaystores.co.uk/dysonoutlet/

So I have followed the debate here, watched the independent reviews on Youtube and checked out the ads for the V10.
Yes it is expensive and I could not find any discounts but ended up 3 weeks ago buying on the Dyson website with next day delivery (sunday) and a free extension tube which enables me to reach my stairs ceiling. Having a back that's giving up and my wife has been unable to lift for many a year I already had a light weight cordless AEG but the Dyson is in a different class. So I have given my 2kwh corded away and with a life of 15 years for the Dyson battery I can look forward to being able to use the Dyson into my nineties!
The way I look at it is that we were in the point of getting in a cleaning person once a week so the Dyson will pay for its self in less than a year.

I've always found Dysons better at picking stuff up than any other hoover. I know someone who works there who said that Dyson test all new machines from every manufacturer to measure against. They also said the V6 was better than the V10, with regards to use, attachments and price. We already have a ball Dyson, it's really good if a bit heavy, and I love the fact I can get to every part should it block up thanks to over enthusiastic hoovering. I'll definitely get a V6 next time though because it's much lighter.

I'm not sure how new all of the models being discussed are, but we got a refurbished Dyson DC14 3.5 years ago, think it was about £60, and it's still going strong. Might be another way to save some money :)

Why do people need to go all drama queen or confrontational over every product from an entire brand? Like they came up with some novel phrase.

Back a little Ozzuk made several interesting/ informative posts not favouring Dyson. Read and learn how to engage your brain.

Or go back to your internet-free hermit life and bowl of gruel.

Why do you feel the need to direct personal attacks at total strangers on the internet? I expressed an opinion.

  • I have a frozen shoulder and a bad back. I love my Dyson v10 . I have a large 5 bedroom house and rarely run out of battery. Maybe because I don't do the whole house at once or maybe because it is so light and easy to use I do it more often, not sure really. I have a friend who has MS and the associated problems and I lent her my V10 and a V8 to try out and she also found them very easy to use.(interestingly she had been very anti them having heard bad things)
So I can vouch for them being easy to use with health problems. Perhaps though you could see if anyone you know has one or go and try them in the shop. I have had Dysons for years and I can also say the company has been very helpful whenever I have had issues
Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D

We bought a second cleaner when they were discounted via an MSE link, so we don't have to carry them up and down stairs.
The impression I have is that buying a Dyson is chancy - it may be the best and most reliable cleaner ever, or the worst!
I've seen too many of them on Freecycle 'for spares or repair'
    I would never buy one.

You have to make sure you change or wash the filters at the recommended interval. Fast track to overheating and motor burnout if you don't.
