If it is difficult to leave the EU now, I can only assume it will become even more difficult as time passes.

It's really not difficult to leave the EU. Trigger A50, set a deadline, choose a new trading arrangement, settle liabilities and leave.

Indeed. All the problems stem from the simple fact that we have still not decided what kind of relationship we want – and crucially, actually accept the consequences of whatever path is chosen.

Yeah, we can leave now in case things we don't like happen in the future, which we can comfortably handle. It's like cutting off your leg because you don't want a knee replacement in 20 years.

None of our current concerns are the fault of the EU. Some of our future ones may be, so why not wait until the future ones become current concerns and decide what to do? Maybe the EU won't exist by then?

Ah, so you're talking about trying to threaten the EU that we'll pull our money / military / intelligence if we don't get a special deal? I can't see any of that working, unless your plan is for us to be completely isolated.

We could get a deal like Switzerland (and the EU has offered to use any existing deal as a starting point) but it doesn't fit with Mays red lines, namely freedom of movement.

The Guardian has an interesting article that suggests a way everyone can be happy - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jan/17/semi-brexit-england-wales-leaving-eu-solution?CMP=fb_gu

Essentially, if Scotland and NI Remain (as they want) and England and Wales leave (as they want), whilst remaining within the UK, the the GFA is safe and England/Wales can have almost any sort of deal with the EU (which could include free movement of capital, services, goods but not people or the ECJ).

Good of the Guardian to catch up with us as we've been discussing this option since five years ago. ;)

Where do people get the idea from that we can choose? What has been going on for the past 20 odd months..........

An expression I have heard recently is that Leavers do not know what type of "Leave" they want.

It's funny ... I don't remember various flavours of Leave being on the ballot paper.

I think if we end up Remaining this time around, we will never be able to Leave. The EU and UK political machinery will be engineered to avoid an exit.

I doubt it. What evidence do you have for that claim?

We've mostly been arguing amongst ourselves and choosing options that have already been ruled out.

The EU's track referendum with individual state referendums, for a start.

I don't say this with any animosity.

On a pragmatic level, if the EU is better at delivering than the UK government for different bits of the UK, why bother with an UK parliament?

History is littered with moves to/from super states/super unions/empires. This could be part of one such cycle.

I can’t believe people still think there is a bargain to be driven

A bargain is a deal agreed between two parties, what makes you think that we cannot agree a deal?

I don't think that we will get a great bargain, in fact, I think that we will almost be certainly worse off, but there are degrees of being worse off, and I'm hoping that it is not as bad as it could be.

Yep let's go for that, dissolve parliament get rid of the wasters that cannot deliver what the UK electorate voted for and pass everything to Brussels. All in favour say AYE!

I mean if it's that good let's go all in:eek:
