That's an impressive weight regime Mr Generous!
Because the gym I go to runs sessions (you can't just rock up and use the equipment, it's sessions only), they do things slightly differently. Lots of different weight exercises - bicep curls, hammer curls, weighted lunges, shoulder presses, reverse flies, etc etc etc, and - a new introduction yesterday - the skull crusher... But never more than 30 seconds of anything, before moving on to something else (for another 30 seconds) then coming back to the first exercise, and so on. It's pretty full on, and absolutely never boring!!
Currently have a house full of people and Mr Spouse is cooking Christmas dinner (I've done two so far myself, so definitely his turn!!) - I guess I should go and offer to help.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
What a fantastic and inspirational thread!! So pleased I found you all. :j
My situation is that I'm a 52 year old that has been a member of a good gym for the last four years.
I dont make the most of it but I want that to change this year.
I have got into yoga the past few years and absolutely love it but due to work commitments and family issues, have not been able to get as often as I would like.
The family issues are what keep me moving. My parents are just seventy, (had me at 18) and this year has been nothing but hospitals and illness for them both. My mam has had COPD for the last few years and has finally accepted after her last hospital stay that she needs to be on oxygen at home. She has also had a blocked bowel and a detached retina to deal with which is ongoing.
My dad is in his 5th week of recovery from a triple heart bypass. Hopefully he should have a new lease of life once he fully recovers.
Seeing my parents suffer as they have makes me want to keep fit and healthy for as long as possible. I know sometimes life has other ideas and health problems can spring from nowhere but I believe keeping healthy has got to benefit the ageing process. My mams illness is probably down to the fact she smoked heavily from the age of 12 and never gave up till she started suffering with her lungs. The only positive of this is neither me or my brother smoke and nor do any of the grandkids.
So what are my goals?
I want to keep up the yoga as it benefits the aching back I suffer from periodically.
I have done a step class on and off for as long as I can remember but this year, I'm going to keep it up. Went yesterday to my 5th class in row.
We have a new stair machine in the gym and I could only manage 2 minutes on it! My goal is to manage initially 5 mins and then if possible.......10 minutes.
I tried a spinning class last week, (my husbands favourite) and I really struggled. Not sure if its for me but can see how it would improve fitness quickly.
Going to have a go at body combat and somebody else suggested kettlebells.
I dont have a weight issue due to having a physical job in a restaurant and on my feet all day. I do plenty of walking and I like the odd swim.
I just need to find a new routine that stretches me that little bit further and increases my general fitness so I will be following you all with interest.Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £600 -
OK people. It's New Year's Day - what are our fitness resolutions this year?
I'm going to start going to the gym every other day, rather than 3 days a week (works out at 7 times a fortnight rather than 6), and on the non-gym days I'm going to do something else - maybe Zumba, or get the bike out, or go for a proper walk.
All the best for 2019 everyone! No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
Hi all!
I've decided to subscribe to this thread to inspire me. This time last year I was really fit - I go to a gym that has loads of classes, which I (used to) love, especially Body Pump. I was doing 6 or 7 sessions a week, including yoga and Zumba, so was doing pretty well. (Print out shows BMI 21% metabolic age more than 15 years below chronological age, etc.) However, I've had a hectic year and slipped out of it in the summer mainly due to work. So I have a lot of catching up to do. One thing I noticed is how I start to get joint problems if I don't exercise not least as I do a lot of sitting when I'm working. I also have to watch it when I do exercise as it's easy to overdo things, especially with weights.
My plan is to get back into things from 14th January, as I have a birthday weekend away and a conference between now and then. My gym has a Milon studio, which I found really useful when I first got back into things as it is tailored to current fitness levels but gradually increases. I'm going to book myself a session to get an up to date programme. I will then go 3 - 4 times per week for about a month, before venturing back to the 'heavier' classes.
I can't wait to feel like me again and feel some muscle tone!somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
Well done pandora205, that sounds amazing - as I said to a previous poster, if you've written it on here, it will happen! No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

My first gym session of 2019. Lots of newbies, as predicted - I hope they stay!
To the larger guy who was really finding it difficult - don't give up. Your next session will be easier, and the one after that will be easier again. Don't let the aching muscles make you think that you shouldn't have done it. And, please, try to deal with the fact that most of the people there were women, and all of them were fitter than you. None of us were this fit when we started, and we know that you're not as fit as you would like to be - but if our being there is going to put you off, then you will never be that fit. We don't want to be your excuse! No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
No gym for me, but I've finished walking 1000 miles in 2018. Now I start again for 2019, three miles a day. I have 55 blog readers signed up for it, so I have to carry on, they are relying on me to cheer them on.
I have bought a cycling helmet so I'm going to get the bike out for a spin every now and again. I'm an outdoorsy person, don't fancy the hard work of a gym.

Ilona - it doesn't matter what you do, so long as you do!! How did you start blogging? You have a good number of followers.
My OH has managed to get his bike out for the first time in ages - he's been working away for quite a while, so there's never been time at weekends. He started small, just cycled 2-3 miles - but has now built it up to about 7.
And I've just completed one of the challenges I set myself - I have a favourite walk that takes me 20 - 25 minutes to do at a normal pace (assuming I don't stop at the tea room!), but today I did two circuits, the first power-walking and the second a combination of jogging and walking. It took me 26 minutes - 15 minutes for the walking circuit and 11 minutes for the jogging/walking circuit. I'm quite pleased with myself! No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

Hi. You've just reminded me that it is my bloggy birthday, I started it on Jan 2nd, 2009. I get 6000 page views a day, 988 followers. There are a lot more readers because people don't have to register as a follower. I also have a youtube channel.
How it all started.

Please note that I make nothing from my blog, no adverts, no sponsorship, no endorsements.
I started it a few months before my official retirement date, when I was reducing my working hours which then reduced my income. I wanted to document my frugal lifestyle. I clicked on Blogger.co.uk and followed the instructions.
I think a thread about fitness for older people is a good idea. I believe it is very important to take responsibility for your own well being. I am trying my best to stay fit and healthy through a good diet and exercise.

The larger guy came back!! I'm so pleased! He didn't find it easy - but he did it. He managed 3 sit-ups - then he had a rest and did 3 more. You can't ask for more effort than that!!
Ilona - I've just had a quick look at your blog - will make myself a nice cup of tea later on and settle down for a proper read. It's a really interesting concept - and the idea of making the most of what you've got rings very true with me. I hate waste, whether that's food, or money, or time, or wasting a healthy body by not treating it right. Right now I've got a grandbaby to play with - got to make the most of every moment!
