  • That's such an interesting point maddiemay - I'm sure your OH's friend was thinking he was doing the right thing by cycling rather than driving!! And it just goes to prove that we need to look at all aspects of fitness in order to stay as healthy as we can for as long as we can.
If you google 'causes of osteoporosis', lack of weight-bearing exercise isn't included in the list. But if you google 'preventing osteoporosis' then doing weight-bearing exercise is top of the list! And Nebulous2, I think shifting 30 tonnes of rubble can definitely be counted as weight-bearing exercise!!

  • A bit stiff this morning, due to going to the gym three days in a row. But back when I wasn't a gym bunny, I was aching when I got out of bed anyway. This feels different - better - and shows that I'm achieving something!

I'm also determined to work my way up the leaderboard of the 'Festive Finishers' challenge!! I was in 19th place (out of 222) on Sunday, I'm in 17th now. I checked their opening hours over Christmas - it looks like I'll be able to go on Christmas Eve morning, then things are back to normal on 27th so I'll be back again then. I'd forgotten how competitive I was!!

    A bit stiff this morning,

So am I. Not because of over exertion, because I tripped over a stone flower pot in my friends garden yesterday. Feeding her fish while she is away. It's like an obstacle course, needs the health and safety executive in there to do an assessment. :rotfl:

Bashed my right arm and shoulder, and my rib cage. Probably pulled a muscle, or even cracked a rib, I don't know. Being careful not to stretch out my right arm.

No walking yesterday due to soreness, and continuous rain. It's stopped now, the rain that is, so I'll go and do my three miles.

Should be more careful where I put my chuffin feet.

    I love skip diving.
    :D
  • OOO Ilona!! That sounds painful. I hope the fish/friend was grateful!!

How did the three miles go? I walked up to Aldi to buy a goose (as you do...), and I'll be off to the gym tonight. My normal routine is to go for a walk on the days when I'm not at the gym - we live just by the Leeds Liverpool canal, so a pleasant walk in either direction. However, I confess to being a fair-weather walker - if it's warm and dry you can't keep me in, but if the weather is even slightly iffy, I'm afraid I manage to find all sorts of things that I need to do indoors...

I had to stop running a while ago due to a couple of injuries (I'm 61 in January), so I started doing body pump classes, and walking on the treadmill, as my BMI crept into being classed as 'overweight' (wow I was really disgusted at myself). Anyway I got myself quite fit, and lost about 15kg (82 to 67kg).

I've now stopped the body pump classes, because I started running again (park run pb = 23.57) and I also started weight training too. I'm quite happy where I am now, but I do want to break 23 mins in my park run eventually.

  • Well done chucknorris, great that you came back from injury. Hoping Ilona will too!! So frustrating when you know what you want to do but you can't do it.
It's been a funny old evening here at Trailing Towers. Headed off to the gym for the 18:45 session, as normal - only to realise that my heart rate monitor needed charging. They only need to be charged once every 7 months or so, and I've had it 7 1/2 months so I shouldn't really have been surprised. As we're doing this 'Festive Finisher' challenge, I didn't want to do the class and not have it count towards the challenge, so I came home and charged it, then went back for the 8pm class, with a fully functioning monitor. It looked like I was going to be the only person in the class, and I was just about to leave (I draw the line at doing it on my own!!) when someone else turned up, so we did it. That was the last class of the day, and today is the last day of the challenge - so as far as I can tell I've finished 14th out of 222. Which I'm ridiculously pleased about. Not bad for an ould lass.
Finally managed to eat at 9pm. I'm going to have a rest day tomorrow, then back in on Friday for the start of the pre-Christmas 'I've worked my socks off so I can eat whatever I want on Christmas Day' sessions.

For some reason, I can just never get interested in running. Partly this is because I don't have appropriate footwear (horse-and-cart issue, why buy it if you don't run?!) but also I just find it boring. I can cycle or swim all day (metaphorically), but running I find uncomfortable. Having all my internal organs sloshing about puts me off.

Of course, aerobic/cardio exercise is exactly what I should be doing more of. I'm decent on both strength and flexibility, but endurance is the dimension on which I'm weakest. There is a park run locally, and it looks pretty friendly and approachable. Perhaps for the new year I'll take a stab at going along and see what happens ...

Pain eased off a bit now, so maybe nothing too serious. I did my three miles yesterday, now up to 969. Twelve days left, so I should just about manage the 1000.

Looks like a nice day today. Just off out to feed the fish, pay my council tax at the Post Office, and do another three miles. Keep at it everybody.

PS. I used to do the Park Run, but found it boring. Too many people getting in the way, I am a loner, ha ha.

  • I've always done 'something' to keep fit (Pilates classes, yoga, walking), but 6 months ago joined a gym that really ticks all my boxes. I go three times a week, the trainer makes sure everyone's technique is good, suggests easier versions if you're struggling, but - and this is key - encourages/insists that you move up a level if you're able to.

This is what I needed!! No-one had ever told me before that I could lift more than the small pink 'girly' weights, and no-one had ever shown me how to do a proper press-up, or stood ready to catch me when I tried my first full-height box jump.QUOTE

Went to the swimming baths yesterday , 70 lengths in 35 minutes (my age). 70
    came home for my porridge!.
Went on my 30 miles bike ride 2 hours 15 mins.
Had 2 chocolate drinks & a banana for lunch.
went to gym & did a 5k run , and sauna.
    I am disabled .

    not getting wet today!:)

Horses for courses, the bottom line is that cycling is just as good, perhaps even better due to the low impact. I do also cycle, weight train and hike a bit too. Although I like swimming, I get put off by the pool being crowded and the extra hassle of getting there, and changed etc. I live next to Ashtead Common where I can walk, cycle and run, and I also have my own gym. But running has always been my main focus.
