I assume if there are power cuts it will be because we are short of power, not totally without it, so cuts ought to be organised time-wise, like those in the seventies. They were in 3-hour blocks, and timetables were issued so you knew when you were going to be cut off. I don't remember how many times a day it happened; several I think. But we managed quite well. We quickly sorted out who/what was in what zone, and organised shopping, friends, pubs, take-aways, launderette, library, to give examples, to fit in with the cuts as much as we could, when we weren't at work.
If you have a landline, it might be worth getting a cheap phone that doesn't rely on power to work.
It's times like this I wish I still had a gas hob, but I'm fairly adaptable, and I'm not responsible for, or to, anyone else so I will just have to wrap myself in a patchwork quilt and go to sleep (I'm good at that, these days).13 -

Meant to point out that the above list takes for granted that we're OK for candles, batteries, torches, fuel for stoves and all that sort of stuff. Also not included is much in the way of food other than tinned. That's because we always have ample stocks of bottled veg and fruit plus home-grown dried beans (which are so much better than the shop ones!). We don't count the stuff in the freezer on account of the simple fact that if the power goes off and stays off for a considerable time, it'll be too risky to eat - especially if we only have the backup methods on which to cook it.We're all doomed11

Hi guys
Don’t forget to keep phones, iPads etc fully charged. Phones can be used as emergency torches but also you’ll be able to let bored kids play games as long as they don’t need Internet.I was at school in the 70s and annoyingly we had a slot starting at 6pm that came back on about midnight so we had to make sure everything was turned off that might come back on while we were in bed. We treated it as exciting rather than annoying but today I can’t see littlies understanding the lack of something to keep them entertained.
