Talking of books I still have a box of 20+ paperbacks I bought from charity shops through last summer/autumn -- just in case!
If you enjoy a book a good resource for info on the author and books published in date order is - fantasticfiction.com
They also suggest similar reads by other authors.
I can check here and then see what my local library has.13 -
Amazon have loads of cheap books. I threw out a skipload of books when we moved and now I'm busy replacing them all14

Just before Lockdown 2 there was a guy going round our charity shops at the same time as me, who was pulling 5 or 6 paperbacks from the shelves in each one (depending on what offer they had going - usually 2 or 3 for £1) and marching up to the desk & paying for them, almost without looking at them. It worried me a bit because they generally all have the same books on the shelves; I had visions of him getting home & discovering he'd got 3 or 4 of the same book several times over! When I volunteered in one, they had strict rules for what went onto the shop floor, which basically meant that only current or very recent bestselling bonkbusters & chick-lit were put out, and after 2 weeks they were "culled" if they hadn't sold. But in non-fiction, nearly everything went out, no matter how outdated or obscure the subject matter... made my heart sink!Angie - GC Sept 25: £226.44/£450: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)12

Is this concerning, especially as UK government favours the apparently less effective one as it's cheaper.I’ve totally lost my prepping momentum. I’m not sure where I’m at. Amazon just delivered three times my usual amount of cat food. Fresh milk is a bit of a problem and I’m sick of long life. I’m exhausted from cooking and eating, and disheartened because I haven’t put on a single kilogram in weight. There must be some good news! 😃Have you considered a doorstep milk delivery? For the whole of my life there have been glass bottles on the doorstep. My milkman and I always had a good chat putting the world to rights but we stopped that last March. He leaves the milk and I've put the monthly bill on dd for however long the present situation goes on. We miss our monthly chats when he collected the milk money. He's from a very long established dairy farm going back generations with both the cows and the dairy. Not so common nowadays but I'm supporting a local business rather than large supermarkets.pollyxIt is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.
There but for fortune go you and I.14 -
I work in a charity bookshop. This year-when we have been allowed to open- we have been so busy. Paperback fiction has been flying off the shelves but we have had a lot in too.
Jigsaws have also sold really well and we've had lots of parents in stocking up on children's books.
I'm quite fussy about which non fiction I put out but we do have some volunteers who can't bear to throw a book out" so some rubbish does end up on the shelves.13 -
Books are an important part of Prepping though - I read of all these people using Cloud or Kindles etc but what if the elect is off? The internet is off? Books are safer to have

Thanks for the smile on depressing morning. I knew there was a reason for all my bookcases, they hide the walls. I could change the wall decoration by moving the books around but then I might not remember where they are.

My sons look at me like I've lost the plot because I have a paper address book (I use one for all my passwords as well in case I get locked out of things). However I remember a friend who was busy putting all his addresses onto his computer. A few months later his computer broke, he didn't have the money to get it fixed or replaced and lost all access to the majority of his friends and contacts who would send him notice about job vacancies/ act as referees etc. Then of course, at least once every year, someone's phone has been smashed or hacked and they put a message out for everyone to send them their details again.
DS1 didn't put his address on his wedding invitations (everyone will let us know by messenger or in person , mother). Then I asked gently if he really wanted to haul all their wedding presents back from Italy (which was the alternative if no-one had an address to send them to beforehand). My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage14 -
