DigForVictory said:Some of me envies him. A world of decades with no phone, no internet, no nonsense.
Much more of me thinks his neurological condition facilitated it all & that (thanks to biology) no woman could have managed it without a steady supply of birth control pills designed to also prevent menses. Also that while life as a hermit might have been fine, I want to hear the story a decade later when society has tried to integrate him. He got a job with his brother - which (depending on how tolerant you are feeling of your siblings) may or may not have worked.
His idea of prepping is not mine, his idea of waste disposal is not mine, but I live as part of a community & he's having to figure that.
It’s odd that you think having periods would prevent a woman doing this- we’ve only had the pill for 60 years and it’s still not available to many across the world. Neither is sanitation. A lot of cultures segregate women and it’s not unknown for women to allow their flow to be absorbed straight into the groundThere is a bountiful supply of absorbent Moss in the forests plus this man was an adept thief. He managed to find butane gas to cook with 😃 i’m sure a woman in a similar situation would head for the bathroom
and rifle through the tampax.LOL – ask any household with females in if they would be surprised if all of a sudden there Tampax stash was depleted, I doubt it. We are just naturally stock up on the things13 -
Well today was stressful! I have managed to get most of the uniform online or through order and collect but shoes are a different kettle of fish. My eldest ( 15) has grown again and is now in size 13 (!!!!) shoes which are difficult to get at the best of times. The school shoes were quite easy as the ones he had last year we knew went up to a size 15. We managed to get a school bag at the same shop. The trainers were a different matter, we ended up going into at least 6 shops ( more than I have been in since the beginning of lock down) and there seemed to be no size 13 anywhere that was in a style he liked. All the time the shops were getting busier and busier with plenty of covidiots (love this new word) walking around with their masks under their chins, walking on the wrong side of the walkways or family groups walking abreast taking up the whole of the space or stopping and chatting blocking the whole walkway for others. In the end I just freaked and said we would look online. He knew the style he liked and luckily the online Nike store had the size he wanted. I came home stressed, with a headache and actually laid down and had a nana nap to try and get over it. Tomorrow I do it all over again with younger son!! Shoes, trainers and bag although he has "normal " sized feet so hopefully not such a drama. I don't take them together as they argue and wind me up!
No wonder the rates are starting to creep up. There are so many ignorant people out there who seem to think the regulations do not apply to them, they are immune or they are just plain stupid. Either way after this shopping trip I am going back into hibernation, only venturing into town for groceries, animal feed or essentials.

Elaine thats exactly how I felt taking DS shoe shopping, i'm finding anything to do with school stressful. DS school uniform won't be here until 18th at earliest, I fortunately have the bigger size here but i'm finding the whole uniform buying such a con.13

Elaine my DD had no joy shopping for DGS's shoes either and she remarked that there were plenty of covidiots around too. She also has had to order online, just hope they arrive in time as he starts on Thurs.
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently11 -
Managed to survive today in town buying younger sons shoes, trainers and bag. It was less covidiots around but still enough to have to dodge. We went early so no queuing into the shop and thankfully we got all three in the sports shop, so one shop stop! Brilliant local uniform shop messaged me that my order was ready for collection so walked round and was handed the blazer etc ready packed. The boys had booked themselves into the barbers online for adjacent 1/2 hour slots so it was rush to finish shopping and then get shorn! I have now managed to finish the school shop , just waiting to see if everything from Amazon turns up on time fingers crossed! All have been dispatched and are on prime or free two day delivery so latest they will arrive is Thursday. Eldest is back in on Friday whilst younger goes back on Monday although they are both in the same secondary school. I have bought masks for them to wear in school and on the bus, reusable, washable ones. Now need a lie down in dark room as this year has been stressful! Normally I buy everything they need first week of school holidays but this year with being unwell its a last minute rush.

Had an interesting conversation this morning with the stallholder next to me at the Emporium; she was bemoaning the fact that we're just breaking even at the moment (and we're the lucky ones, we know) and added that she's now struggling for space at home to craft her lovely wares. (She's a well-known maker of highly original & delightful things.) This is because her (well-paid professional) husband has suddenly taken up prepping & filled her "studio", aka the garage, with tinned & packet food, loo roll etc.; apparently the Great Loo Roll Panic suddenly made him aware of the potential mayhem in the employment market and the supply chains that may happen should we get further lock-downs, not to mention wandering out of Europe whilst no-one's looking.

Almost everyone I know has now got at least a small stock of essentials in their home. Once bitten, twice shy and all that. Only a few stragglers that haven't done so and they seem to fall into two camps : can't afford to, or believe the pandemic is a hoax.

This week I've stocked up on cat food and litter, from Zooplus. This lot came from Spain, last lot from Germany. After 1st Jan who knows if we will get anything at all.

If anyone's interested in how the vaccine development is going, it appears there are now 3 front runners. Dr John Campbell has gone through all the details in a video released yesterday. He is hopeful that at least one will be available for use before this year is out. The first is the well-known Oxford vaccine (based on an adenovirus), the other two are RNA vaccines, these will be the first of their kind, RNA is injected and our cells can then make the antigen needed. Fascinating stuff! Well worth a watch:13
