pavlovs_dog said:we were grateful to have bought chorizo pre lockdown. You only need a little bit for big flavour.
cured meats (salami etc) and pate have quite long dates by fridge item standards and were great to add variety to lunchesI didn’t realise how flaky my appetite was and how little food I fancy. But I was tempted yesterday by risotto with chorizo and chicken in it 😃
I need to get the scope on local farm shops because they usually pretty good.I’ve had a bottle of smoky flavouring for some time now – that gives a nice flavour and body to stews. I need to stock up on Worcestershire sauce and stock cubes.I’m starting to get stressed because I don’t know where to start🙁 On the plus side I have three weeks housekeeping to do one big online shop with.15 -
Just over two weeks ago, I had to do a big shop ahead of pre-surgical quarantine and happened upon part-baked baguettes. These are shelf-stable and had a BB of a month. I got mine in Home Bargains. I found them by accident when looking for something else; they weren't a product I'd even considered as not something I had ever bought before. I am now using them after having used all the fresh bread - I know bread is freezable but my tiny freezer was full of other things. HTH.

Those part baked baguettes are really useful and only take about 12-15 minutes to bake. If you fancy a crusty bacon baguette (or cheese, or ham, whatever) just hoick it out of the freezer and 30 minutes later you're tucking into a warm, crusty baguette. One life - your life - live it!13

They take 10 mins in my gas oven but it has always run hotter than the advertised temperature. Am presently eating baguette straight from the oven, nom.

I also keep a few part-baked baguettes in or rolls. I never have enough freezer space and they are handy to keep. Also useable after date.13

GQ - i know they have a reasonable sell-by date anyway but i've had them for 6 - 8 weeks beyond that and they've still been fine.I wanna be in the room where it happens14

I hadn't thought about the part-baked baguettes as I prefer wholemeal and rye but there are other shelf stable breads with 2-4 month use by dates. I try to buy stuff I can rotate into my normal diet.
Ditto on some pre-packed cheeses, as I can't eat cow's milk.
I have two stashes, the basic now topped up for lockdown/Brexit which needs topping up a bit and an emergency stash of shelf stable stuff that just needs a microwave (or not) if I'm unwell. So tinned soups, beans and fish and chilli, microwave naan, rice and curries etc.
GQ, wishing you all the best.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing13 -
elaine241 said:... I too need to buy a big bag of porridge oats as the boys seem to love it in the winter with home made jam stirred in ...This old boy loves it too. That's why the present stock level here is just under 40Kg, all with a BBE December 2021. I won't even mention the 23Kg of flour. That's before another 16Kg arrives this afternoon ...We very much need a bigger house(It's not as OTT as you might think: the two of us get through a kilo of jumbo oats a week and 2.5Kg of flour.)

I heard somewhere that "they" think the 2nd wave might come in a couple of weeks, rather than October/November ish. Better crack on in case we hit another lockdown I think. We'll have to worry about Brexit later. And Winter. And normal flu.14
