Si_Clist said:Can anyone please suggest a bulletproof recipe for some good old-fashioned plain and simple biscuits ? Something like a digestive type of thing, or perhaps one with currants or sultanas in? We've also got some dates which I could chop up, but I have no idea if that would work in a biscuit.Sorry no recipes to hand - I tend to mix ingredients randomly and pray
. But do they still publish those old Bero books? I wish I had kept mine - it had some wondersome simple but scrummy recipes. The 'Bero book' was a staple in households of the 50s and 60s - when most people did their own baking.

I think they still do them. It’s only about 6 years since I ordered one. I still have my mother’s original Bero book but it is dropping to bits.16

I am still using my Bero book from 42 years ago! My mam bought it for us when we got married. Since then, when our DD's got their own homes, I've bought one for each of them. The modern ones have more faffy recipes in, whereas I'm more of a ' fewer ingredients the better' girl. 😁
I think it's probably a local tradition in the North East to pass them on from mother to daughter. I know my mam was given one by my nanna.

I think you are probably right Mrs CD. I’m from the north east too and still have my mother’s Bero book. I live in North Yorkshire now.10

Melting here too, I’m going to have to wait until the evening to put the oven on for banana bread or we might combust 🥵
Heatwaves are only going to get more common as time goes by so I’m prepping today by reading about what I can do to keep the house cool. I used to live in Germany and in the summer it would get above 30 every day with regular thunderstorms. The houses there usually have roller shutters which are kept closed during the summer daytime to keep the heat out. They also provide security. I suspect it would be expensive to have them installed here but blackout blinds for the sunniest rooms could be sensible. May invest in some more ice cube moulds as well!Original mortgage free date: November 2044Current mortgage free date: November 2038Chipping away...13 -
I have privacy blinds which filter the light and keep the rooms cool - but not as dark as blackout blinds!14
