Good lord, GQ, thats appalling! Food for thought, actually - there's a *lot* of footpaths in my town, not alleys, but footpaths, i.e. much narrower than alleyways. Lighting is often pretty grim, and not using them often means a detour - sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes more.

Makes me think about what your friend did ... if he'd carried on walking towards them, I wonder how they'd have reacted?

I have to pick my way past the three local crackheads of a morning whilst they're waiting on the steps of the underpass for their first pickup of the day. Not worried in the slightest about the two males - it's the rattling 4'9" harpie that looks like she'd slit your throat without a moment's hesitation that's the concern. I'm most bothered about the post school time trip when they're invariably there having consumed some of their purchases though, particularly as it's dark so early, so I walk/limp across two lanes of dual carriageway on blind bends, walk under the flyover [strike]that recently had big lumps fall off it onto that stretch[/strike] and avoid them totally with only the threat of imminent death by squishing every step of the way.

I can't do it on the way to work because the corner coming from that direction is simply too sharp to see anything coming at all. So I pretend I don't see them other than as people to walk walk past - I suspect that in a lot of cases, that's what they expect and prefer to somebody suddenly peeling off as though they're about to call the police (or, if a particular demographic is shared, a rival).

This is why us in that there Sarf Lundun don't do eye contact - like dogs with no interest in a scrap, you studiously look anywhere but at the threat. And don't just avoid walking along alleyways, give the entrances themselves a wide berth.

The biggest risk IMO is the person you know is there but can't be seen or heard properly. The quiet conversations and unspoken communications between one another, the shape who appears briefly in your peripheral vision or whose shoes are all that can be seen as you approach or who sees to disappear as you get closer. Or, as GQ's unfortunate friend found out, the one you turn your back on, having already visibly reacted their presence.

  • Oh, Mrs LW, where did you get the peas from? I can't find them down here anymore (used to use them as extremely cheap seeds as well as for cooking with) and online has been prohibitively expensive when I've looked.

Not an inspiring selection of stuff there for the money, if you're a veggie who hates macaroni cheese you're snookered! Is it just me, or is there something rather tacky about taking advantage of an uncertain situation in order to make money? I think this company, if it is a company, sounds like a bunch of shysters.

    Afternoon Preppers All,

HOW much for that Preppers box!!!!! Dearie, dearie me. The frightening thing is that people are buying it at that price.
I'm still pottering on, a few extra tins of fruit added to the Capella zombieBrexit apocalypse cupboard today.

No shortage of dried peas here Jo-Jo. They are in all the supermarkets and on various stalls on local Manchester markets.

Hadn't thought of suet for the cupboard; I've not really made a proper sea pie for several years now, could just fancy one. Baked brown crusty suet pastry over a steak, onion and potato filling served with pickled cabbage and pickled beetroot. Oh my goodness I've been hit by a very bad wave of nostalgia here MrsLWMy mouths watering at the very thought.

Hope you're all well. I've just been discharged from various hospital departments and am so pleased that my meds are finally working as they should. Best wishes to all of you.
