My prepping today is in the form of dehydrating 2 cabbages that had languished in the fridge drawer for a few weeks and gone 'sad' on the outsides. They are the pointed Hispi type but when I trimmed them and took off the sad bits they are crisp, green and fine underneath so I've chopped them up and they are in the dehydrator and when they are finished, apparently cabbage takes 6 hours (we shall see) I shall let them cool completely and they will go into a kilner jar with a rubber seal and go into store for the winter. I have also rescued some pears from the fruit bowl, 3 weeks in and they still weren't ripening and I've simmered them to soften them in a red wine syrup, then reduced the syrup and poured it over them to flavour them, couple of decent desserts and no waste as the peel is for the compost heap. Had to stop myself doing the same with 4 perfectly OK apples to empty the bowl! they will serve us better fresh!
The older prepping thread that Vanoonoo started way back is still there in the archive and is 'PREPREDNESS FOR WHEN' if you put in a search online it's there in it's entirety.

So far today I have made a loaf of bread, some bread rolls are baking in the top oven, cake in the bottom oven, eggs boiled and shelled, and will soon harvest our first earlies for new potato style tatties with our lunch, as well as some lettuce from the garden. I can't wait!!February wins: Theatre tickets13

Is anyone else having problems with the MSE site? it won't keep me signed in, every time I come out of the site I have to sign in again although my sign in details are complete and in the box along with the tick to keep me signed in. As of lunchtime too today I 'm not able to access the Forum Home part of the site all I get is a message saying no items found. Is it our computer? is it me? is anyone else getting the same thing?12

Prepareathome I would love you to post what you put in a BOB
I had never even thought of having anything like that and would be interested to know what people have in theirs, to date my prepping is really just doing what I have always done and stocking up the store cupboards, freezers etc. Growing a few veggies in the garden and greenhouse which served me well in the first few weeks of lockdown but if there is one thing this hideous virus has taught me is that the unexpected will and does happen and therefore to be as prepared for any eventuality as you possibly can is sheer common sense.Well Behaved women seldom make history

Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently12 -

thriftwizard said:Hello Vanoonoo! Good to "see" you again. I've been reminded of the various prepping challenges we've thought of over the years today; DD1 & I went for our usual riverbank walk today, breathing smoke all the way from the big forest fire to the south & west of us. Though they'd got it under control yesterday, today's wind has fanned the flames back into action & it was actually quite thick as we came back down over the river. I started to wonder uneasily whether it was getting a bit close for comfort & evacuation might be a possibility, which made me realise that I haven't checked my BOB lately. It's not even a week since I was happily announcing I'd be better off staying put in nearly all circumstances; I hadn't anticipated wildfire being a potential predicament. Just goes to show you never know what's round the corner...
When we got home I checked the local news; another fire has also broken out, closer still, and the county's filling up with clandestine tourists in "stealth" campers, (i.e. panel vans with thermal screens) with their "disposable" BBQs, and all the public loos are shut too...Blah13 -
Euronorris my tatties aren't showing above ground yet and my maincrop are not even planted yet..
