I've always used the powdered skimmed milk and it's not a use by date it's a best before date which is no indication of it's safety but is the recommended shelf life of the product before it might start to deteriorate slightly in some way. I've never taken any notice of best before dates, I've used packs of skimmed milk powder a couple of years after the best before when they've emerged from the depths of the store cupboard and haven't had a problem with health or taste. I don't know if this could be said for full fat milk powder though as the fat is what would taste rancid if it had deteriorated in storage. In these unpredictable times though even if the internet says there is stock you might find when you try to order it that there isn't, we found a site that I've used before selling Indian food supplies that online apparently had lots of stock like rice and lentils but when we tried to put in an order everything came up as sorry sold out so your milk may not be there in reality!11

I'm fine, lovely peeps. I successfully re-registered on the new forum but just didn't much care for the format, so haven't been here for weeks. Sorry to have dropped out of sight suddenly without explanation, with all the to-do over C-19, I've been pre-occupied. As have we all, of course. Am on holibobs from work this week, back to working from home next week. Haven't been in my office for weeks, going to be really strange when 'going to work' means actually leaving the flat.
My plans for the 2020 gardening year involved a LOT of potatoes, I actually bought 16 kg of seed spuds in mid-Feb and large parts of the plots have been en-spudulated. Gonna feed the 'rents, kid bruv and myself. Other than WFH/ allotmenteering/ hand-making cloth masks/ reading, I haven't a lot anything to report.Am good for TP as bought big on a Lidlly sale deal last year, and have plenny of tins.Hope everyone is well and deriving a small satisfaction from not being gently mocked for being preptastic? I've gone from being the fruit loop in my fam to being the prescient one.Love & peas, GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Glad you are ok, Greyqueen. I ended up having to change my username when the forum changed.
My DDs no longer laugh at all my prepping. I was even able to send one some sachets of yeast this week.13 -

What was your username before, if you don't mind my asking? I'm seeing some usernames I never saw before and don't know if they're old hands or new pals.

It was Thirzah. The yeast was in T**** and they did have some more this morning-only about 8 packets . I still have a tub of yeast so didn't buy any more. I did wonder how many people panic bought yeast and flour but won't get round to using it.
Seemed to be a lot of older men shopping this morning. Perhaps that is usual for 7.30 but a lot of them didn't seem to know their way around the shop.13 -

One of my Spies and Informants tells me that you can whistle for any kind of flour in any kind of supermarket here atm. I haven't noticed a problem with bread supplies myself, but flour a standard go-to panic buy item, isn't it? I don't have any flour at home but that's normal for me, I don't do baking (can do it, inc bread, choose not to). I suspect there will be a fair bit of wastage of food items as folk get back to normal. At least TP stashes can wait for their turn without rotting, although you don't want them anywhere where mice can get into them and set up housekeeping.

Having a quick catch-up of the thread, thank you all for jam ideas. I've also remembered that bakewell tarts have jam in and OH is rather partial to them!
Went to Mr T this morning before starting my work from home and it seemed like they had everything back in stock (other than flour). To OH's relief, eggs, 2 pint bottles of milk, honey and fab lollies were all available
I've been managing to keep our stores at a reasonable level and we've been doing a lot of work on the allotment. I'm now starting to turn my mind to financial preparedness. I am expecting the recession to be severe and protracted - much worse than 2008. I am fortunate to have a job which I think is fairly secure and reasonably well-paid, but my OH is doing a PhD and I am concerned he will struggle to find a job when he graduates in roughly 2 years' time so I am refining our budget to see where we can make savings to squirrel it away for when his stipend income is no longer there, as well as opening new accounts to get the best rates.Original mortgage free date: November 2044Current mortgage free date: November 2038Chipping away...11
