The Prepping Thread - A Newer Beginning ;)

If it IS just the beginning we have the skills and the knowledge to make whatever we DO have into the best that can be made, don't falter now, if it IS the beginning then the whole world is going to be in the same place with the same problems to face and there will be solutions found to whatever those problems may be. It may not be the comfort and ease we're used to but generations of our ancestors have lived without the benefit of modern technology and lived long and well enough that we are here today as testament. It's not going to be an easy path to tread but mankind has trodden it before and emerged if not entirely intact at the other end then entire enough to continue on to make their and our futures.
We are stronger than any of us realise, a wobble now is just that, only a wobble xxx.

2023: the year I get to buy a car10 -
On Thursday we had our second log store delivered, lovely driver brought it into the back garden for us, we built it yesterday and got it watertight and quite a lot of this morning has been shifting the last load of logs we got a few weeks ago and stored on the makeshift log store under the car port up the side stairs to the back garden for storage. Phew, I've carried some weight and we're more than 2/3 or the way through the job. Will finish this afternoon and then we can use the pallets that make up the downstairs store for kindling! we're half past next winter already!11

Got supermarket deliveries booked for today and two more at weekly intervals. Some neighbours helped me out when I wasn't getting much, by letting me order from their own delivery. So I returned the favour when my own deliveries started. That way, we get most of what we want. We pay each other by bank transfer so no money changes hands. It works well, except last time they ordered loads and I was ages inputting it. When it arrives, will have to separate and bag it for them to collect, then work out the amount owing and email them the details. The idea is beginning to pall!

I'm feeling a false sense of security at the moment. Larder is stocked and emergency preps holding for time being, although I have been on bed rest the last few days with bump hurting so haven't been monitoring fridge levels, DH said cheese and margarine now low. I do have butter as back up but that's a waste and last resort. We've managed to set up regular weekly deliveries from a supermarket which is meant to start in a couple of weeks this will be a shared delivery for all 3 family members households as we live in close proximity, and we are still using a local shop who delivers bakery bread, milk and eggs each week, I am eternally grateful to them as supermarket is very unreliable with milk and eggs. DH is getting ready to concrete the greenhouse base, we bought one from a garden centre last yr that was closing down so got a ridiculously good deal. All seeds have been planted and are now sprouting in the portch. Children are content with being outside in the garden everyday we are finding our routine, well until baby arrives in the not to distant future. Elderly neighbour is still going out for 20 mins every day in their car and coming back with one shopping bag.12

Ps - overheard other sensible neighbour offer to get them stuff but they declined, and they have family who could help, i'm not being heartless but surely everyday to the corner shop is ridiculous there is only one of them its not like they need loads. I need to stop ive turned into a curtain twitcher!!10

I'm looking for 'futures' when we go out on our walks along the lanes and field margins and have found clean Elder just coming into flower so I can make cordial and hopefully leave enough to go to berries and make elderberry cordial in the autumn for the 'cold season', I've also found masses of clean Blackthorn which is absolutely covered with blossom so there should be sloes for sloe gin and last time we went along the field boundary I spotted a couple of crab apples in blossom so there may also be crab apple jelly in our future. My neighbour has a crab apple tree so I shall hopefully be able to use some of hers in return for a few jars of jelly too. There is a huge old walnut tree on the grass verge on the hill just above our house and no one except the squirrels and the crows harvests the nuts so I'll get what I can of those and my neighbour on the other side has a massive rowan tree that overhangs our forecourt and I may be able to use the berries for some rowan jelly. We have blackberries all along the fence line across the road by the brook too so possibly bramble and apple jelly/jam as well. I shall keep looking and hoping to find further treasures. I shall start stockpiling sugar with intent in the near future.12

I got a sack of sugar (5 kilos) & my son looked at me aghast. I pointed out the hedge blossoming & several plants showing little green leaves & was clear this was not to supplement his hot chocolate but was a planned jam ingredient. When he grumbled I didn’t make enough strawberry, I nearly shoved him into the crypt- four bags of frozen strawberries, jam for the making when I have the certo. Next Tesco run so a fortnight. (I alternate supermarkets.)10
