Rape flowers are the stuff of Satan, I used to live in the Fens, and when the rape was in bloom on warm sunny days the stinging yellow colour hurt your eyes and the fumes made your eyes water. I use rape seed oil in cooking, though, the health benefits compare well with olive oil.One life - your life - live it!13

Hello all, what beautiful weather for staying home and getting on with the veg patch! We have been lambing flat out so I am not sure what day it is as I have been up at all different times of the day and night! Luckily not too many "disasters" and only one very very tiny lamb that needs to be fed on a bottle and stay indoors with us.
I went shopping Monday, my only day a week out away from the farm. I literally try and get everything done in that run from shopping, shopping for isolating friends, collecting prescriptions and picking up sheep/cattle/hen/dog food at the local feed store. I admit I was nervous before I went early on Monday morning despite having decent face covering, blue nitrile disposable gloves and anti viral spray I bought online before all this kicked off. There were no queues and everyone seemed to be behaving well and keeping their distance which was a big change from the week before. In Lidl I found most of what I needed although they seem very short of milk, no eggs , few pasta but I am stocked up on the UHT and have my own store of pasta and have hens. My teenage boys drink milk so I need to have quite a few pints of fresh milk a week! I went to Morrisons who had milk but again no 6 pinters and only 3 per customer, also picked up cider which is essential in my opinion!
Hopefully the social isolating and keeping distance will start to have some effect on the amount of cases coming to light, fingers crossed. I am pretty sure the lockdown will continue further than next Tuesday when it was due to be reviewed. I don't think we have reached a point where we can just let things go back to normal and hope that the infection rate wont rise. Even a slight reduction in the lockdown, in my opinion, would cause a spike in cases. Either way my boys are not going back to school anytime soon and they have a full timetable set out once the Easter holidays are over. School obviously thinks this situation will carry on for the foreseeable future.

You need to get your milk down here Elaine, when I went to Tesco at the weekend the smallest milk they had was 4 pints! Bought it in the end after dithering but will probably have to freeze half (only OH drinks it).Original mortgage free date: November 2044Current mortgage free date: November 2038Chipping away...11

Doing a very happy dance here - my rat-tailed radish seedlings have popped up! If you've never come across them, they're a radish grown for the seed pod, rather than the root. The pods are not hairy like standard radish pods, but smooth, crisp & crunchy and taste delicious either scattered in a salad or in a stir-fry. I forgot to order any seeds this year, but came across some I'd dried late last summer. I wasn't sure whether they'd still be viable - they were just sitting on top of the boiler, where I'd dried them, they might have dried right out or even cooked! - but they seem to have been fine. Also saying hello to chard, beetroot & kale seedlings in my lashed-together half-polytunnel this morning, and even some parsnip seedlings on the allotment.

DD1 and James are driving over with some bits for us that I can't get here from the bigger Boots in the city, our pharmacy here in the village is a tiny branch and has very small storage capacity so is often out of what we need. Hope they are allowed to and not turned back as I have some potatoes from the sack we got via our lovely milkman to share with them and a few things from our store cupboard that they are running short of to give in exchange. I also have a big bag of next size up clothes we're been storing for the baby who is growing like a little weed and getting taller by the day that they need so it will be lovely if they make it and we can still do a safe exchange of things on the forecourt at the front of the house and not have to put them or us at risk. It's been so far not quite such a stark period having to self isolate because of the preps we had in already, being a prepper has it's advantages I think!17

It's all a bit odd; now we're in a situation where we're actually using some of our preps, and I don't feel like crowing about it at all! I do feel immensely lucky & privileged in that we've had plenty to eat all the way through, the loo roll supplies have held out (without attracting any unwanted guests!) we have a garden & an allotment to "escape" into and although OH is probably technically a little vulnerable, he's able to work from home & avoid obvious risks. We have our health & fitness, we have a DD working in a supermarket so able to pick up anything we need (her wry comment is "who'd have thought I'd end up a key worker in my little job-between-proper-jobs?") and another with the skills to turn out scrubs to be proud of! I'm not earning any money but then, there's not much chance to spend it, either.
I'm very conscious though that this must be horrible for those trapped in a small flat with young children & no money coming in. Also for all those who have to work with the elderly & the sick, with no proper protection. Many, many people in awful situations through no fault of their own - at this time it seems proper to give thanks for my own luck but petition the universe or whoever for better things for all those less fortunate.
However, I'm harbouring a small but uncomfortable suspicion that this is just the beginning...Angie - GC April 24 £532.07/£480 - oops: 2024 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 10/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)17
