I received my gadget today. Works a treat. It only has ordinary batteries with it though, which I'm sure would be dead by the time I need to use it. I have replaced them with Duracells with a use by date of 2028.

Um, I would be trying to get all the sticky stuff off with a mixture of craft knives and isopropyl alcohol (razor blades & cheap gin if the ideal tools not available),
    ...
Thank you! I have both gin and razor blades - and a weekend project now. (Bows in gratitude.)
  • When you say it like that I suddenly remember sticking plasters & an open phone line should you swipe through something useful, like an artery. Oh yes & leave the front door unlocked during project time - so medics can get in easily.

That or remember the gin is cheap & really only intended to get the gooey stuff off until All the Sharp Things are put away properly?

It's not that I'm untrusting, just I'm a first aider, medic's daughter & spent a few too many Deeply Educational hours in A&E as an impressionable youth.

    Above all, Have Fun!
  • You do know the Internet is already wondering if it's E.T. that is responsible for that transformer explosion?:)

    It could really be ET.

You might also want to put a slip of thin plastic (think plastic feeler gauge) between one of the batteries and the adjacent terminal, to stop the batteries from leaking charge.

Thanks Bob. That's a good idea. I've just used a bit of plastic from Duracell 9v pack to do it.
  • If you buy Industrial batteries (such as used to be called Procell), they come with little plastic covers which prevent such things as a warm pocket when one [strike]hasn't paid attention to the coins, small tools and general detritus in there when stuffing another battery in for a gig[/strike] inadvertently completes the circuit a trifle prematurely.

Because musical instruments (and suchlike that depend upon the things to make a sound) tend to drain when not in use, I generally gaffer the replacement to the back until needed - one advantage of doing it this way is that you know instantly whether you've got a fresh battery, rather than expecting something to work, finding out it doesn't and then have to work out how to get the battery cover open under duress to check whether it needs replacing or if there is another issue; you know it's new, you've just removed the little plastic cover tailormade to fit the terminal, haven't had to tug the connector about to remove it (they are often the physically weakest part of a circuit) so if it doesn't work first time, you know it's an issue with the item, not the battery. And you have a handy piece of gaffer in the event that you drop the compartment cover in the dark or one of the little plastic tabs snaps as you open it.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

One to add into that sort of equation (ie deliberate attempts to dim our sun - as a way to prevent global warming):

    What could possibly go wrong?:cool::cool:

Bill Gates for one obviously doesn't think it's whacky - as he's helping to fund it...

I usually just keep up with news from her direction - as I'm watching the rollcall mounting rapidly of suspicious deaths of alternative health care advocates in America (think it's now around 100 suspicious deaths in last couple of years). But I shall be investigating her website more closely now....

Frankly, that sentence encapsulates the Reassurance of Prepping.

I mean yes it is unspeakably reassuring to know that you have a bit of gaffer in hand just as something is about to escape but the whole store cupboard (other locations are available) sport is
    partly a savings plan
partly in case we get snowed in
partly in case we fall out of work/get suddenly badly sick
partly so we do not have to shop every day
partly to wring the full value out of every penny on promotions
partly as shopping with a car is a treat - lugging all the dry goods would be great cardio but hell on the skeleton
partly as we've Costco membership so some buying in bulk does work out as financially economic
partly so we can afford to be generous with food donations - we have an abundance to be generous from
partly as we have the storage capability
partly as I observed my parents build & maintain a store cupboard, as they learned from their parents
partly as I like to make jams etc as I learned from my folks & they wait in storage
partly as when the norovirus hits, knowing we have abundant loo rolls in store is a relief
and partly for the peace of mind which comes from thinking I do not have to leave the house in this weather.

Now, where'd I leave that roll of gaffer so I can de-rig the Christmas lights in the dashed sensible when you think about it, just I never had technique...

A propos of technique, anyone heard from herbily?
  • I prep because it's always seemed such a sensible thing to do. My beginnings are about as humble as you can get and I remember too well being cold, hungry and having holes in shoes that let in the water and having chilblains regularly in the winter so I will do as much as I possibly can to never be in that position again which means instead of spending any spare cash I have on going out drinking, buying new things for the sake of it, eating in restaurants, hopping off on holiday three or four times a year I stock our pantry, make sure we have good shoes and waterproofs and we buy extra loads of firewood for the stove. It's our choice based on experiences and I don't expect to be mocked and have venom and downright unpleasant rudeness aimed at us as preppers by persons unknown who may never have had any of the above experiences until they actually have and can know how it feels to experience all of them at the same time. Life in 2018 is so very different an experience than life was in the early 1950s! Besides which I have as much right to use my income in any way I feel appropriate as anyone else!
