cheque imaging

I have been with RBS since the Willy Glyns days, and as the recent survey shows RBS service is dreadful from top to bottom. With RBS closing both its and NatWest branches its now a 20 mile trip to visit a branch (our local PO is too small, & all 3 banks have now closed locally, 3 this year).

I pay in several cheques each month, so cheque imaging is an attractive option. I know that Lloyds, Barclays, HSBC and Yorkshire bank offer the service now. But not clear who else does, or when others plan to do so. When you ask you tend to hit a brick wall. 1st direct say they are planning to do so, but no timetable..

Does anyone able to add to this, or got info on when eg 1st Direct will offer the service?

  • Funnily enough this came up for me the other day, I received a cheque for £18.59, which would have cost me AU$30 to pay into the bank, and obviously visiting a branch isn't really an option!

Not much help, but I discovered that NatWest, First Direct and Nationwide don't offer it via their app. FD are apparently doing it soon (as of late 2017!!), Nationwide are offering it in branch, no info on NatWest.

Lloyds allowed me to open a savings account in app, and I scanned and paid in the cheque that way, cleared in 24 hours. Would be particularly interested to hear if anyone has info on whether FD/Nationwide will introduce it in app, as these are my main, active UK current accounts, for future cheques...never know when it might be useful.

Thanks i called FD this morning, very helpful, said that cheque imaging would be launched in first quarter 2019 - when I asked other institutions, did not get any commitments from any of them. So well done FD!
  • Worth bearing in mind there may be limit on the value of cheques you can pay in via mobile imaging (£500?). So not a complete solution if local branches are closing.

Nationwide have no plans for mobile phone cheque deposits. This is the answer they gave on 29/10 when someone asked for it through Nationwide's Connect Community:

Please can you consider taking up what other banks are doing and allow cheques to be scanned in for deposit. Currently I have a 240 mile round trip to pay in cheques and posting is both expensive and not without the risk of the cheque going astray.
    Response from Nationwide:
Thank you for submitting your suggestion about cheques.

Although image capture through a mobile phone/at home is not currently planned, we are part of an industry-wide initiative to reduce Cheque Clearing from the current timescales to 23.59pm next working day. This will be achieved through in branch image capture and will be fully rolled out by Autumn 2018.

You can also post your cheque to us if it’s difficult for you to get to a branch.

    Thanks

HSBC have cheque imaging via App & when deposited through the Post Office.

In Branch it's pot luck as to whether that one has it or not. My local still doesn't.

I've just recently switched to HSBC and tried to deposit a cheque via imaging on app but despite uploading clear images it kept saying there was a problem and that I had to pay cheque in at branch

Yes, the HSBC app isn't without its problems for Cheque Imaging.

I paid in a personal cheque fine but a larger size (physical) business cheque won't deposit. Tried them a couple months apart, same result. Was easier to image the second time though!

I did contact them about it after the first time, they said they are aware and working on it.

Aren't you able to deposit cheques though?
  • A small post office is a very odd excuse for not using it......
