Queenie - I declare the mystery ingredient to be brown sauce!! I'm probably wrong but it's what i chuck in everything........

I've only just had time to look at this today - ah the joys of working in the NHS - and (a) agree with everything about HE or Domestic Science as I knew it. I was always bottom in this, every year, no exception. I personally feel this was because I was the youngest of three who went to the local grammar school with teachers out of the ark and they were duffers so i was constantly terrified and comments like "yet again a stunning non-effort" didn't help!! That said everything was done from scratch and if you wanted to take it for A level you had to do O level chemistry or you weren't allowed to! Strange school looking back......
    (b) My Mum used to make jam cake from the Be-Ro book (old versions, don't think it's in the newer ones) with either raspberry jam or mincemeat at Christmas. They would always be the first thing to sell out at my Brownie Fairs and people would come up to her the week before checking it was going to be on sale and then turn up with their cake tins!! Obviously a market for it. I just don't understand this lack of baking. How long does it take to mix a cake - even if you do it by hand like I do? Bung it in the oven and then wait. I blame it on gossy mags. Last night I was in ASDA and was looking at people's trollies (as I do) and wanted to shake so many people - one person had a load of microwaveable sponge puddings all for about £1.50!!! no wonder the dog was getting ecomony tins!! I despair........
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

right, it's not brown sauce, vinegar, worcester sauce, beetroot, carrot, soy sauce...... it's not marmite is it? but then that would be like HP. it's something savoury........mmmm nothing to do with this serving it with cheese lark the yorkies do is it? would malt extract be savoury? oh, i'm off the watch cold case and then law and order with the fantastic (late) jerry orbach and his acting eyebrows. In the words of arnie "I'll be back"...... :shhh:

seriously i have seen old recipies for fruit cakes and christmas puds, where gravy browning was added when there wasn't much brown sugar about to give the cake a darker appearance (during rationing?)

beans? I thikn we're wandering in the realms of the quite frankly frightening here....... cold case has ended up being taped due to a small foray into the kitchen and two cakes later............. in a bad case of not planning i have no bun cases so the marmalade buns will have to wait until tomorrow - damn my clear outs...... :D I will now sit in the corner with my dunces cap on for not keeping my kitchen well stocked..................

Lol - I swapped aduki bean recipes some time ago with a woman in Singapore - we were both surprised when we got the recipes - hers was sweet (aduki beans are mainly used in puddings there) and mine was savoury...
