What are people's thoughts on Busch Gardens? We are planning on going at the start of our holiday, but they are doing an "extra day free" offer, can you make 2 days of it, or are there better ways of spending your time. (Money is tight, and as a group of 8, another park may be too expensive)

Personal opinion mind but i think it's the best Theme Park in Florida and very under rated, it offers so much variety for all ages plus Sheikra is class.

Ok it's completely different from the Universal or Disney but i feel it offers more of a package and definately worth the drive from Orlando and worth spending all day there.

Anyone got any thoughts on Walkie-Talkies, we are 2 families going, so may split up at times and will be in 2 cars - is it worth picking up a cheap pair in Walmart or does everyone have the same idea and you get loads of cross-chat?

Not for me im afraid, i always found it better to arrange timings and a meeting point, i always thought that when i saw people with walkie talkies they were nerds taking things way to seriously.

To be fair i reckon there would be cross chat and interference on the airwaves anyway and you get what you pay for, a cheap set from Walmart will be exactly that! Cheap.

    Each to their own though.

Having tried to get a copy for ages (and it finally arriving), I've now discovered the State of Florida now has its version of the highway code online here:

    http://www.stateofflorida.com/Portal/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=24

This is well worth reading and downloading, as it describes what you should do in an accident, the rules that differ to ours and the plethora of unusual street signs. I've spent a total of about a year driving in Florida and still found out things that I didn't know, so it will be useful to both regulars and first timers who are driving.

I think to use my mobile phone in America, it is 55p to make a call and 55p to receive one (T-Mobile), which between 2 UK phones means £1.10/minute!!

And Mrs Blink may have her Italian phone with her (her family are Italian), so if I phoned her, I would be doing America - England, England - Italy, Italy - America
Texts will probably be fine most of the time (but it's not as much fun as running around with walkie-talkies pretending you are on some secret mission ;)

(And just out of interest, anyone got any idea why it is cheaper to send a picture message than a text?)

It is a bit expensive on the mobile but you can by cards, pay as you go deals etc specifically for going to the states, im pretty sure a search on here or on google will unearth a few gems.

It's something to think of. I have a bit of experience on the 2 way radio front as i used to get them for work. To get a decent set to call just a short distance (up to 1/2 a kilometre) in the UK you can expect to pay around £80 - £100 so a cheapo set at Wallmart at the same value in dollars won't in my opinion do very well. It's worth check the phone situation out, im pretty sure you can get pre loaded sims or something.
  • Should add we just used our mobiles on the last few trips and it wasn't that bad. Probably no more than £50 for me and the Mrs over 2 weeks.
