  • Is there no possibility of you/OH working either FT or PT?

If I was in your situation, I wouldnt be spending on a nursery place for 1 day a week (seems silly when your both at home) and I would cut out the smoking. This would free up at least £65per week. I could never justify spending more money on fags than food for my kids, but you have done well in cutting down:T ....keep up the good work. Remember you will get free perscriptions for patches etc as your on JSA.

  • I understand - I have chosen to be a stay at home mum while my kids are young. They grow up too fast.

Have you thought of doing something in your spare time to get you in a good position for when you do return to work. Since having my first child I have been studying with the Open University and am about to graduate. All this has fitted in around children because you study from home. On JSA you would not have to pay for any courses you might wish to take. You don't have to have any previous qualifications or study experience either. I can't recommend it enough. The website is www.open.ac.uk if you are interested.

Could you work a couple of evenings a week when OH is back from work (once he starts) and DD is in bed.

As for a plan of action my main priorities if I were you would be:
    • Find out all interest rates of all debts. This is very important to which debt to clear first.
    • Ask for minimum payment monthly amounts for any debts that are not being paid at present (if any)
    • Cancel nursery.
    • Sign up for internet banking so can keep easier track and make payments online (if you have not already done so).
    • Go to doctors to get patches and cessation clinic to make the giving up/cutting down smoking easier.
    • Find out about local playgroups so DD can still interact and you can have a change.
Its up to you but I was just hoping this list might focus/motivate you if write them out and tick them off as you get them done.

Totally agree with this. Fill your boots with courses while you are at home with the children so that when they go to school full time you have a plan and you are not thinking 'what can I actually do after all this time at home'. Its the ideal time, while you can get help with costs of courses, and you can work around the children to do some studying or some short courses.
  • cancel your contract mobiles if possible. if you still really need mobiles then get cheap payg ones quidco have one at 7.99 or if your phones are out of contract put a free payg sim in them.

with certain benefits you will get free prescriptions so go to your gp or smoking quit clinic and get all the help you can to both stop smoking - it's better for your kids.

  • A lot of the temporary jobs for Christmas may lead to permanent positions after Christmas, if the temporary period is successful. Places like supermarkets with nightshifts etc.
