Huh? I get charged £8 by ParcelForce. I thought the higher fee was if it was sent by EMS?

Which would still be a Parcelforce fee.

I was trying to work out why you even mentioned RM vs PF. Then I saw the thread title....

I saw something on the news the other day about someone who challenged the Royal Mail's handling charge fee..it went all the way to the Supreme Court which ruled that the fee was unenforceable… I have been trying to find out more but it seems to have been hushed up… nothing on Google as far as I can see…Does anyone know anything, please?

Well if you know it was handled in the Supreme Court,it shouldnt be hard to find?
Who brought the case to court?

Who do you think would "hush up" a Supreme court ruling over something as mundane as an £8 (or £12) fee?
Seeing as the court only deals with cases that are "of the greatest public or constitutional importance affecting the whole population", I can't see them getting involved in something like this and it's probably just an urban myth.
  • I can understand people being annoyed at VAT & Handling charges for goods they have ordered. However, three members of my family have had to pay these charges for GIFTS sent to us from my son & grandchildren in Australia. Altogether the family have had to pay £75 in order to receive their Christmas gifts from relatives 12,000 miles away. Australians can receive $1000 of gifts before tax is charged. This government is making money from easy targets when they make us PAY for our own Christmas gifts. It's a disgrace.

    Unfortunately thems the limits.
Aussies often get caught out due to being used to the $1000 AUD limit at home.

He isn't an Aussie & he wasn't caught out. He wasn't aware we would be charged at this end. He usually orders John Lewis gift cards to be delivered to us but our granddaughter (aged 5) wanted to send proper presents to the UK this year. They won't be doing that again!

He wasn't caught out but wasnt aware.....sigh.
  • Whether he was aware or not is immaterial. It's the fact that we are charged for receiving GIFTS that have already had tax paid on them at the point of sale. Both governments profit & no one gives a damn that thousands of families scattered across the world will be fleeced by the government because they want to exchange gifts for Christmas (or birthdays). We are just another easy target by Customs & Excise. Sigh...
