I was going to say exactly that;)

With your budget you could afford a decent place and it's close to the coast and the moors. The M5 is handy when you want to go "up country"

Totnes is a bit arty, I always think it is a scaled down version of Glastonbury

Don't forget you have longer daylight hours and a lot less snow than Scotland

Oh I will have a little look into Totnes :) It could be a last minute dark horse!

It certainly sounds like my sort of place and ticks a lot of boxes from the brief look I've just had. Any recommendations on area?:A
  • I'm really surprised you've dissed Hastings as an option.

Its really cheap and some lovely property. I lived there for a couple of years and loved it. The old town is gorgeous and has a lovely vibe and everything is on your doorstep, park, beach , country.

Yes some of the locals are skanks and you can definitely tell there is a ' benefit brigade' around but I think you get that in a lot of places. For me the positives outweighed that and the council and tourist board are doing a lot to rejuvenate the area.

I did fall in love with Hastings at one point, but discounted it due to some of the negative things I read. Parts are beautiful but getting some outside space in a good location of Hastings seemed impossible on my budget.
  • What sort of things did you read that worried you ?

After initially being at the top of my list (due to the location and local vibe)

I researched and comments like 'bedsit city' , 'huge drug problems' and a lot of unsafety for a single female put me off.

Again, I could be completely wrong and I felt gutted that i had to discount the area. Your opinion on it would be good ? When did you last live there?

My sister went to Uni in Cardiff and I thought it was fab, they have really improved the city over the last decade or so. Also Northern cities like Leeds and Manchester!

    Hello,

I live in Manchester and I really like it - although I have lived here for over 9 years now!

Some ideas of places in Manchester which may suit your type of lifestyle:

    - Ancoats: Lots of apartments are popping up, it's near the Northern Quarter and has easy links to the train stations.

    - Monton: Near Worsley so it's quite a nice area and there's restaurants/bars for socialising

    - Stockport: I'm biased as I live in Edgeley - BUT Stockport is changing with independent businesses moving to the old town and there's various creatives in the area. Plus it's got great links to the city centre. You could easily afford a 2 bed terrace in this area - and there's nice parks around too. It's also close to Didsbury and Cheadle for more restaurants etc.

I love Didsbury and always have done so it's nice to hear how a lot of people who I know in Edgeley have moved here from there! I sadly could never have afforded a place there! If I was making a fresh start, I'd love to move abroad but I don't think that will happen any time soon!

Hope the search goes well and I admire you wanting to make a fresh start :j

There are a lot of flats there as many of the large period properties have been converted. I lived there about 6 yrs ago and never felt unsafe, I am also a single female. I lived on a road near the park which was lovely and away from the main ' town ' area which is where the kids probably hang out. There is no denying there are areas of deprivation but I definitely wouldn't have a problem moving back if needs be.

What would you think about this area ?

  • Personally I wouldn't go that area, it has had issues of anti-social behaviour. It does have its own train stop as its a little outside Hastings.

My preferences are the roads around Alexander Park or the old town. I'd also consider the Sea front but not along the main boulevard.
