Hi D-B I hope you feel a bit better.

I have to say that I don't believe that all nurseries are child-friendly if that makes any sense.

I have been really fortunate with my nursery places but a girl I work with did consider becoming a nursery worker but the place she went to completely put her off!

A childminder would be a good idea or does your local council offer anything. Since they are not a private business I feel that they give their staff better and proper training.

If you cannot find any alternative then for your own piece of mind I would take your little boy out of there.

What would be the point of returning to work if all you do is worry about your son?

Hope it all turns out OK for you.

Hi I've read your thread and can see you have been really upset over the actions of the pre-school. I am a Nusrsery nurse and a mum.
I ran the local pre-school for 7 years until I had my dd 5 yrs ago.
We often had children who cried and were unsettled. My advice to them was too stick it out.
Saying that though I would say the 3 hour session is obviously too long for your son to feel comfortable with.He needs to know that he's there to have fun but you will pick him up.I suggest you meet with the pre-school manager or your sons key worker to talk about your issues.
    My suggestion would;

week 1 : drop off at normal time, leave the premises, go for walk or something and go back after 45 mins.Collect him even if he's happy playing.Make big fuss about all the fun he's had.Look at pictures etc.

Week 2 : do as above but leave him an hour and do the same on pick up.

Week 3 : Only if you are comfortable leave him for 1 1/2 hrs and do the same on pick up.

Week 4: Increase time again to 2hrs. Again only if you are comortable with this.

    Week 5. Increase to 3hrs.

It may seem a long process but it's worth it in the end and makes the transition to main school alot easier.

Your son will begin to understand that it's ok to play and that you will be returning and hopefully make lots of new friends and have loads of fun.

We also kept the door locked for security issues. The pre-school ashould be ofsted inspected so you could ask to see their report if you are really concerned.
Have a look at the other children though. If they are happy to go in and having lots of fun that's usually a good indication of a good pre-school.See if you can get chatting to some of the other parents. They might have their own experiences to tell you.

I wouldn't suggest staying for the session as this confuses the child, when you actually leave. This is probably why the workers were'nt keen on this option.
I hope I have been of some help.remember only do what you feel comfortabale with and keep talking with the staff. :)

Both of my children loathed nursery - they are six years apart in age and I tried a few. They loved going to the childminder though, who took them to playgroup etc. And, strangely, they both went to full time school at 4, complaining that they would miss something if they only went P/T. I don't understand it, they are very different personality wise, but they! had that in common.

DB- my son is a similar age to yours and although understands loads is not able to speak much either - says mummy and daddy and more and more words but isn't clear yet. I'm sure he'll get there.

Anyway, to the point. I had a childminder who was wonderful with my DD. However, wasn't the same with DS and it was a bit of a relief to move up here where I have found a wonderful chlidminder to have him. It might be worth investigating if you just don't feel like it's right. However, you might find if you have a a good chat with the staff and try out a few shorter sessions, it might work out fine.

  • Do you have to send him because you are at work?
