It will depend very much on how strong the terrestrial signal is.

If you are very close to the transmitter, it may work. However either a loft or roof aerial would be better and more stable.

You can check here to find out the signal strength where you are.

Basics: OP, do you have an aerial? What specific channels do you want to watch (it doesn't help just repeating 'Freeview channels').
If you don't have an aerial, then you either need to pay extra to get one installed to get all the Freeview channels, or use your existing satellite dish to get Freesat. The latter is a straight box swap, no engineer or installer required.
You can access all the Freesat channels from your existing Sky box once you terminate your subscription. All you lose are the subscription channels and the ability to record,or to view existing recordings. If you want to know what channels you will lose, just pull the viewing card.
The Freesat/Freeview channel line ups are very similar.

I do have an aerial - I guess I just don't use it on my downstairs tv because everything goes via sky. I do have a tv upstairs that received the freeview channels.

I'll probably sound really stupid here (sorry but I have had sky/virgin for the past 20 odd years so I genuinely have no clue about anything other than these) - so if I cancel Sky - the dish and box stay and I can just get a freesat recorder?

I have discovered that I can access most stuff via the Xbox - iPlayer etc and Now TV passes - I guess I just want to have the ability to record stuff?

  • Yes, if you cancel Sky, the dish & the box stay and you'll still have access to the free Satellite channels.

If you get a freesat box, it will replace your sky box, you would just connect up the cables from your dish to the back of the freesat box.
  • If you have Sky Q boxes then those must be returned as you only rent them.

I went with Now TV broadband...I'll just download iPlayer etc on to the Xbox and get a Now TV pass when Game of Thrones is one.

    Thanks everyone
