OP said this: "... but I want a freeview box that will record."
To be honest - having been a sky customer for the past 13 years or so - I really have NO idea about other services/freeview/freesat etc..... I am a complete Thickie McThickie in this area!
I had no idea about the whole recording Now TV thing.....but I do want to record freeview channels (don't judge me but I do like to record Homes under the Hammer - Martin Roberts.....odd crush...)
I should probably find out what the actual options are really....
What I want to do...
1. Have access to freeview channels and be able to records them/pause etc
2. Watch Game of Thrones (preferably be able to record it in case I am unable to watch it at the time)
3. Watch the next series of A Discovery of Witches (recordable as above)
I think that's about it....ENFP - AssertiveOfficially in a clique of idiotsSmoke me a kipper; I'll be back for breakfast0 -

Which is why I listed the Freesat boxes in addition to the already listed Freeview boxes but that went over @Robisere s head.
You keep saying Feeview but Freeview is through your TV aerial, Freesat is the (near) equivalent through the satellite dish.
You can only watch (the latest) GoT or DoW through either a Sky or NowTV subscription and if you want to record then at this moment in time the only game in town is a Sky sub.
Time to hone your negotiating skills.0 -
Flick216 - recording Now Tv isn't generally necessary. If you have the Entertainment pass, which would include the channel that GoT will be on, the episodes are available on catch up for usually 28 days ish. I regularly watch series that are ongoing, but rarely watch as broadcast.
The box sets are available for as long as Sky want them to be on, but usually they have an 'available until' date on - sometimes months to watch them.
I have access to Now TV through my Youview box, but as previously mentioned, it is limited - currently only the movies are available, which I don't currently subscribe to. If I want to watch the entertainment channels I watch Now TV through my TV's built in app, or through the PS4.
Now TV is much cheaper than Sky, but is not HD. I've never had Sky HD so couldn't compare. As it's all streamed, a decent BB speed is desirable - I don't know an exact figure but around 15mb/s was fine for me before I went superfast.0 -

See! These are the things I have no idea about - this is why I need help! Thanks for the info - it's really appreciated.Bigphil1474 wrote: »Flick216 - recording Now Tv isn't generally necessary. So I don't have to watch the episodes as they come out? That's brilliant!
I was going to try the NOW TV BB as well - I have the superfast sky unlimited one at the moment - I wasn't sure if I could get away with going for the lower package on NOW.......ENFP - AssertiveOfficially in a clique of idiotsSmoke me a kipper; I'll be back for breakfast0 -
I got rid of Sky a couple of years ago, and haven't missed it all. After you cancel, you will still be able to get all of the free channels via freesat through your Sky box and if you want to record them, you could pay (I think) a tenner a month to use the recording facility on your box, or as already said, replace your Sky box with a freesat recorder.
I have never got around to replacing the Sky box as so much is available through the on demand services, both for Sky via Now TV and other channels. Just had a look and there are currently 26 episodes of Homes under the Hammer on BBC iPlayer.
I thought I would miss recording stuff, but really I think it isn't that necessary nowadays. For some reason, Sky emailed a while after I left and let me use the Sky+ box recording facility free. They said for 6 months, but it's still working as I very occasionally record craft shows on one of the shopping channels.0 -
Basics: OP, do you have an aerial? What specific channels do you want to watch (it doesn't help just repeating 'Freeview channels').
If you don't have an aerial, then you either need to pay extra to get one installed to get all the Freeview channels, or use your existing satellite dish to get Freesat. The latter is a straight box swap, no engineer or installer required.
You can access all the Freesat channels from your existing Sky box once you terminate your subscription. All you lose are the subscription channels and the ability to record,or to view existing recordings. If you want to know what channels you will lose, just pull the viewing card.
The Freesat/Freeview channel line ups are very similar. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

If you want to watch through an ariel, does it have to be one that is on the roof etc? or can it be an indoor one located within the room?I Hate Jobsworths!!!0

It will depend very much on how strong the terrestrial signal is.
If you are very close to the transmitter, it may work. However either a loft or roof aerial would be better and more stable.
You can check here to find out the signal strength where you are.

Aerial.
Some people get away with internal, some need it in the roofspace or on the roof. Higher is better. Some can't even do that, and need cable or satellite instead. It depends! Have a look around houses in the neighbourhood to see what size aerials are.0
