You have the right to rerouting or hotel accommodation/meals when an overnight stay becomes necessary. There's a link to the regulations below. The relevant article is article 5. If you want to fly back on the originally scheduled day then look for alternatives and request to Virgin that you are booked on one of them.

You're incorrectly quoting me in post 47 by the way.

The OP's honeymoon (and therefore flights) are next year. Virgin have given substantially more than the two weeks notice required, and as such I don't believe any compensation or rerouting is required (per Art 5, 1c(i) ).

To the OP - this is the problem you can face when booking elements of a trip independently. You have effectively combined a packaged tour with your own self-booked flights. If this had all been booked as a single trip, the responsibility would be with the tour operator. As it stands, you are in limbo land. You have effectively chosen to self-insure your internal flights - i.e. you are taking on the risk yourself - what if the internal flights had been cancelled for example... I also assume that to minimise the cost you chose to book internal flights that are not amendable (which is very understandable). But sometimes this all comes at a cost.

    Your choices really are:

    1/ Book new internal flights
    2/ Stay the extra night
3/ Cancel the Virgin portions of the trip, and rebook via an alternative provider.

1 and 2 will cost you money. 3 might save you money - explore. But explore 3 before deciding on either 1 or 2.

And accept that this is just the way it is - a PITA but not worth getting stressed over, and potentially something that is overcome by putting away an extra £10-£15 a week until the honeymoon bill is due.

The 2 week deadline is only relevant for the right to compensation. Right to rerouting, care, etc. applies regardless of when the flight is cancelled.

  • Hello everyone

I just wanted to post a thank you to all again for your advice. I think we are sorted. VH have booked us on a flight (the same day as our original flight from Barbados to Manchester) which goes to Gatwick. Then they are covering the cost of x2 1st class tickets home on the train. So there you go, those who wanted a compromise have it.... however I am not, and refused to be left out of pocket!

    Thanks again!

I was suggesting a compromise but I also said ask for a reroute very early on in this thread, but i wasnt sure a reroute could be insisted upon given it was a package, I now know different and with that, virgin didnt have any choice once you insisted

who have they booked you with and have they refunded the PE or booked you the same class
  • Thanks richardw, we will!! And thanks for your comments/guidance.

Photome - We are still going PE on the flight to Gatwick, which is with Virgin Atlantic. Thanks for your comments and interest, I very much appreciate it! Didn’t mean, if I did, to come across shirty in earlier posts, just frustrated with what I felt was a very unjust situation. I’ve learnt lots too!

Very good; now put it behind you, and don't let anything else get in the way of a great wedding and a fantastic honeymoon
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • I flew from Gatwick to Barbados with Virgin a few months ago and even though I was only in economy, the service was fantastic and the cabin crew couldn't do enough to help.

Judging from this, your trip in PE should be something to look forward to.
