DIY Speed Cameras and Signs on Public Road - Legal?

There is a road near me that has recently put up 'Speed Camera 30' signs, I'm not sure these signs are official signs, they have a white background with the speed camera sign at the to and 30 at the bottom, all the other here have a blue or yellow background and google hasn't produced any results showing similar/

There are no proper speed cameras but there area two white cameras that look like CCTV cameras, one pointing in either direction.

This is not a private road, it's a residential public road, its more a lane, with little room for two cars to pass and not somewhere that would be considered a speeding hot spot. Many of the residents who live there pay a private security company to patrol the road, I'm assuming is is they who have put up the signs and cameras perhaps.

I shall take photos when I go out later.

So I'm wondering, if these cameras and signs have been put up by a private security company, on a public road, is it legal to just put up these signs and cameras and is it legal for them to record data of passing cars? I feel very uncomfortable being recorded every time I use the road, perhaps by people who have no right to.

They'd likely need advertising consent from the council to put up "street furniture". And if this is on "adopted land" then it might be a criminal offence, especially if they've no planning consent for the "cameras" (which might just be fakes) - it may be classed as vandalism.

In our village a householder put up his own 30mph sign (but not a camera). It lasted a while but then PC Plod has a quiet word and it was removed.

    Ok, so the plot thickens.

    These are the signs:

There are 5 in total, each and every one of them attached to a telegraph pole. Do Openreach allow that?

These are the 'cameras': (sorry, not a great pic, it was dusky)

I had a look at the post they are on, it is actually on the inside of a gate bollard, so on private property but they point only and directly at the road, nowhere else. I though that CCTV/cameras on private property could only record images on that property, not the public road? There are no signs in the vicinity about CCTV/ANPR/image recording. I know they may be dummies, but equally they may not.

I think I'll be making a visit to the parish council office tomorrow, see what they have to say.

I've seen plenty of those signs around, most likely not DIY. Can't see what the problem is, if the area is likely to have a mobile camera unit then they are just being "sporting".

You see nothing wrong with people who have no business to do so potentially recording you every time you drive down a road just because they happen to live there? Hey ho.

If you're doing nothing wrong what's the problem?

The problem is that it appears that a private household or security company could be illegally recording every person who drives down that road.

I may not be doing anything wrong but the person doing the recording likely is. That's the problem.

It's a 30, with proper 30 signs already in place at each end and half way down the road.
