I pay for a TV Licence but why can I not watch iPlayer (even when I have signed in) when I am abroad?
This is what the BBC say but they have been saying it for years!
'While we are interested in being able to allow UK licence fee payers to access BBC iPlayer when they are abroad, there are complex technical issues to resolve which we are investigating and it will be dependent on what legislation is in effect in the UK in the future.'

Use a VPN to show a UK IP address, job done ;)

That's (one reason) why people use VPNs ... it's also why the catch up players and VPN providers are in a constant battle for supremacy. :)

I know VPN''s have their advantages but I can do without them.
I don't do anything I want to hide online so why should I pay a VPN provider to look after all my boring browsing history?

It seems you can't do without them....If you want to watch iPlayer abroad. VPN's are not about you hiding online and you don't, necessarily have to pay.

  • I use https://www.smartdnsproxy.com/  to watch the likes of iPlayer abroad. There is a VPN should you need it, but it's just easier to change to their DNS settings and forget all about it, and no lag from using a VPN. They do a free 14 day trial, so worth a look. They did have a short outage at one point for BBC which they sorted out in a day or two, and I had a problem with either Ch 4 or 5 at one point. Contacted customer support who were pretty quick in getting back to me, and got it sorted.

That site invites you sign up for a free introductory trial but nowhere does it tell you what the subscription is after the trial ends. Why do service sellers think this is a good (or acceptable) tactic?
