Failure to stop and report is most definitely a criminal matter.Isn't it 'rude' to knowingly hit another vehicle and fail to stop and give your details? All this stuff about it being dark and nowhere to park is just irrelevant nonsense. Compounded by then wasting police time on something that is a civil matter.0 -
Go back to where you hit the car and stick a poster on the nearest tree or lamp-post asking them to email you their contact details. Set up a new email address so you're not sharing your real one in public. Be apologetic; you are entirely in the wrong and the note you received wasn't threatening, he/she was justifiably angry because somebody damaged their car and didn't seem to care!0

Have you tried to find the car you hit? You seem to know the road it's on and the side, and it's part of your regular route. Presumably it'd have been worth the few minutes either in the car or on foot following the route to see if you can spot it. If you can't find it, or don't see any damage, then job done and your conscience is clear.0
