  • Of course not, but they haven’t been discriminated against. At all.
They have. Read the supreme court judgment. Even government counsel accepted that the situation it was defending is discriminatory.

There are more than 3.3m unmarried couple families in the UK, out of a total of 19m, living together with shared financial responsibilities. Nearly half of them have children.

But neither you, I nor the FT know how many of those would enter a civil partnership. The number could be very low, after all we know they have declined to get married, they could well consider CP ths same way.

If anyone has left their spouse a life interest in a property with the clause "unless they remarry" may have to amend their will now to include a civil partnership.

This isn't new - the sisters have been asking for this for some years now.

I suspect because it’s no in the spirit of the law

if it makes people happy - I don't know what is not to like

The folk entering into these, are not effecting anyone else's life - so to feel you can pee on their parade is ridiculous, it doesn't affect you and no one is forcing you to have one / attend one, AND they don't need your approval

Not aimed at anyone in particular - just meaning I think it is a good thing and I do not understand negativity surrounding it at all

It is like saying I think Christenings are pathetic cos I am not a worshipper (which I dont BTW)

Whatever brings a glimmer of light into this dark world

I was never interested in marriage, not even as a young girl - and I come from a very traditionalist society and religion. For me, wanting to be with someone and commitment does not equal marriage at all.

I welcome civil partnerships with open arms, as they offer legal and financial protection to long term unmarried couples, many of them with children. Other countries have this too e.g. Canada has common law partnerships.

I'm really curious to know, as I don't really get it. What's the difference between civil partnerships and marriage that gives you such a contrasting opinion? They seem pretty similar to me, except the name.

Because it's basically incestuous? If you can't marry someone you shouldn't be able to enter into a civil partnership with them either for the some reasons. Entering a civil partnership for anything other than you being a genuine couple makes a (further) mockery of the whole thing.

I've got a question about civil partnerships actually. If the relationship ends do you have to go through a divorce style procedure? I'm assuming so given that it seems you'll split assets.

The reason the sisters want to be allowed to have a CP is to take advantage of the current inheritance tax laws, in that any inheritance between spouses (and civil partners) is free of IHT and so their home can be passed to the other.
The reason it won't happen is for the same reason; people would be entering CPs just to avoid tax.
