You're right, beanielou, it makes sense to focus on where the money goes. There may be times in our lives when we get into financial difficulties, and having cultivated the art of sensible budgeting makes it easier to survive the hard times. When times are good and money no problem, being careful with spending can mean having more to spend on what makes us happy.

When I think of the money wasted on "stuff" years ago, and the trouble I and my OH got into debt wise - all done and dusted now, our sole debt is the mortgage, which only has a few years left and I am working to get it paid off sooner. On paper, if the brown stuff hit the fan, we have enough value in the house to sell up, pay off the mortgage and maybe get a small flat or something. Not what we would like to do, but the option is there should we encounter difficulties.

I won't get my target of 20 this month due to a week's holiday involving spending most days, but at least I have started again thinking about NSDs.

  • NSD number 10. OK, others on 20+ but there we are.
I was just going to the shops after work but stopped myself. I don't have anything for supper so going to have a breakfast of eggs, bacon and beans.
I think it depends on how many allowances and exclusions you make, I exclude everything which I spend regularly just trying to cut out impulse buys and things like grabbing a bar of chocolate at the til, so it means that I could still go and spend money everyday but clock up a large number of NSDs. i live near a large supermarket so I do my list but don't one big shop, I pop in several times a week and look for as much as I can on offer and RTC, and if I buy RTC items not on my list but which I know i will genuinely need and which will save me money I don't count them either so much easier for me to clock up NSDs

It really makes us think of our spending & I dont think that is a bad thing.

    What do you think.

I totally agree, this thread has really helped me over the last few months

....and having said all that, our dog broke his leg a week and a half ago, our pet insurance isn't great and neither is having to keep a very active young springer spaniel mainly in a crate with a cone on and only 3 x 5 minutes exercise on the lead per day , so I've been mega-stressed and thrown out of my routine and lost track of my NSDs, but I know I'm nowhere near my target and bowing out until next month! :o:o:)

Today and tomorrow will be spendy days so my total stands at 14 for October. This is because we were on holiday for a week, and I count everything as a spend, even groceries and car parking costs. That is just me making extra strict rules for myself, everyone makes their own rules in this game. 14 is not bad though, nearly half the month.

  • Going to declare my total at 21, need to get a few bits today and tomorrow that will make them spend days
