Beckham escapes speeding conviction

  • I committed a speeding offence on 20 April this year, and received a N.I.P dated 17 May.......well after the 14 days limit. I decided to attend a Speed Awareness Course, (£88), rather than take a Fixed Penalty, (£100), and 3 points on my driving license. Do I have case for appealing this?

Not now ... by accepting the SAC you effectively admitted guilt.

Thanks, DoaM. I rather thought that would be the case.

You should have gone court, but don't forget, you have to prove their mistake, how were you going to do that?

Like I said, the CPS has all the systemic advantages in cases like this. Essentially, a bit like drink driving, you're essentially guilty until proven innocent (not strictly true for speeding but 100% true for drink driving). You would have needed to build a solid case and just standing there saying "yeah I was in the house on the 17th and that's definitely the day it arrived" would not have been enough. You would have needed perhaps your postman to testify as your witness? Unless it was sent to your place of work and the employee who handles post was the person who took receipt?

If you are summonsed to court for speeding, you will go to a criminal court, alongside all the (alleged) murderers, rapists, drug-dealers and robbers. And the TV licence-evaders.
Ah yes. Accept the fixed penalty though and it’s not. Interesting and possibly could cause problems by not declaring a magistrates court appearance if travelling to America these days.

Yes, almost certainly not. There were 3,500 NIPs sent out that day, probably with little or no human intervention.

At £100 a time if a COFP is the result, that is £350,000 a day- a nice little earner :D

Lucky the world is full of criminals and they are able to catch and punish them isn't it :D
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

You do have to laugh though, don't you? I certainly am. Just because Beckham is a celebrity and can afford to pay the fine, really doesn't matter to me. The fact the CPS have had their dirty panties pulled down in front of the entire country.... fantastic.

Absolutely nothing to do with the CPS.

That £350k goes to the Treasury. If it didn’t, then we law-abiding citizens would have to cough up £350k in taxes.

They haven't though, they'll have heard the defence arguement, decided they are ill prepared as they haven't asked the police to investigate the defence then offered no evidence.

If it wasn't Mr Beckham no one will know.

Your money gets wasted like this on a daily basis, they're pulling your pants down.
