If you stuck a grand it in, you only get £15. 1.5% is nothing to write home about.

I wouldn't be rushing to open this account.

Neither of the above cover my own reasons for opening the account; the only thing tying me to the bag of steaming proverbial that is TSB is the 1.5% I can get on the first £1,500.
TSB is 5% for up to £1,500

Ah but aj23, it's about the amount of interest you get as you famously once said, not the percentage.

So my plan is to deposit £250k which means I will earn £3750 after a year. Much better than £15, no?

What if you're due a hefty redundancy payment and don't want it sat in your current account while you decide what to do with it for the longer term? Plenty of people who can find a use for it.

Just out of interest (:)), why would you want to hold £250k in cash?

If I had that amount to deposit I would use three different banks even if a couple of them were paying a little less than 1.5%

Thank you, was easy to open and initial deposit of £5 already showing in account.
  • Presumably this is a loss leader off the back of which they're planning to sell loans? So not much reason to feel guilty about propping up GS if you just open a savings account?
