Would you buy a house with no room for tumble dryer or dishwasher?

Moved in 12 years ago to a house with a dishwasher. It is only used when we have guests, just because it is there. Would not buy one to replace it. A washing up bowl suffices.

I have had a tumble drier on top of a chest of drawers in a large fitted wardrobe- the hose went out of the window when in use. In another house it was in the garage. I prefer to hang washing outside but do use it when the weather dictates.
  • Bought house with utility room. Job 1: rip out sink in utility room, replumb for dishwasher.

    Never had a tumble dryer.

ETA: a dishwasher is a godsend if you both work and cook in the evening. Whilst one might say "it's no bother to wash up", it really isn't easier or more effective than slinging it all into a magic cupboard that makes pots cleaner than you could ever hope to achieve by hand.

You can get a dishwasher about 1/2 a metre wide, they don't hold loads but suffice for a couple. AO sell a few A++ rated for £199 that are 45cm wide

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Best of luck to you, Irish and I hope you find your new home really soon. Don't forget the crime maps if you don't know an area and to visit at different times of day and night on different days as well.

I hope you will let us know how you get on. Good hunting! :)

I will deffo keep you all updated! I really like one particular property at the moment but it is not in the best of areas. Not the worst area either but just not majorly upmarket. I don't know whether this is a feature which should put me off completely as I know for my budget I will have to compromise on something! Any advice is always welcomed.

Unless you want to share the location, it is a little difficult to offer suggestions. You know the area(s) you are willing to live in, we do not. One person's hell is another's OK area, if not their heaven.

https://www.police.uk/ Other crime maps are available but there really is no substitute for visiting an area you don't know on different days at various times as already mentioned, especially during rush hours, brats returning from school and Fri/Sat night after chucking out time. The maps may help you eliminate some of the worst places without the need for a visit.

Some might say a new thread is warranted for a change of subject; I have no such issue, m'self.

Thanks so much Smodlet. I didn't want to clog up the board with too many threads as I know lots of people don't take kindly to that either. I may do if people can help though!

The location is Brockmoor, Brierley Hill in the West Midlands. Everyone I can think of to ask is saying it is OK, there are bad pockets and good pockets but I can't get a definitive answer. I have checked the crime maps and nothing major stands out. I have also checked car insurance quotes and it is a little cheaper than where I am now which is positive.

Have visited at lunchtime and at 8pm, am also going tomorrow morning for a second viewing so will walk around then as well.

I just don't want to make the biggest purchase of my life into a regrettable one, regardless of how fab the house is!

  • We have quite a large kitchen, but one end is taken up with French windows, there is a chimney breast on one wall and a door on another, so not actually all that much space for appliances.

When we were having it refitted, we had a washer-drier in an alcove that houses the boiler and used to be an airing cupboard, and an integrated dishwasher near the sink. I am happy with not having an airing cupboard, and to sacrifice space to have a dishwasher, although I did have to give up the tall cupboard I would have like to have where the dishwasher is and instead have to keep broom, hoover and mop in a wardrobe in one of the bedrooms.

I think everyone has their priorities as to what is important. I didn't want to have to bother with washing up, and didn't want wet washing all over the place in the winter. I do dry outside when the weather is nice.
