Would you buy a house with no room for tumble dryer or dishwasher?

  • If I was living alone I wouldn't expect either although it would be an added bonus to have them .

I wouldn't buy a family house that didn't have space for both appliances somewhere. Currently my tumble dryer is in the garage and only used very occaisionally when there is a 'laundry backlog' . I would much prefer it indoors but there is no space and I do manage.

Do you have an outside space which could be used as a utility area? A garage or shed with power ?

You can get small dishwashers that sit on tabletop /worksurface. I have no idea if they are any good though.

Where will you dry laundry without a tumble dryer ? Is there a space for an airer to fit unobtrusively Most places I have lived in have had a corner where things can hang and dry indoors without causing problems.

I honestly don't understand how people live without a tumble dryer, without a dishwasher is easy, you just do it by hand. Washer dryer imo are not effective and you have nearly dry damp smelling clothes and towels air dried are not as fluffy or absorbent. I will even admit to being wasteful in this area and tumble drying clothes year round, even if its nice out. I would need space for one. It wouldn't have to be in the kitchen, we have lived in houses with tumble dryers in the garage or outbuilding but I would have to have one. We are all different though and only you can really decide if you can live without these things. We thought we would have space for both when we bought but I've viewed houses that don't even have space for a washing machine.

No tumble dryer - never wanted one or needed one. For me, not essential. A dishwasher is!

Could your washing machine be moved somewhere else? Garage, upstairs? There are many who advocate having the washing machine nearer where the clothes are than downstairs.

If your bathroom isn't large enough to accommodate the electrical regulations then perhaps a cupboard in the hall? Stack washing machine and tumble dryer and leave room for dishwasher downstairs.

    Never had either so...
  • I haven’t had a dishwasher since 1989 when we moved into a large family home which belonged to a retired couple who hadn’t put one in their refitted kitchen. We put it into the garage thinking we would lose a cupboard and put it in, but we never bothered. I now live in a small house and there’s only two of us, and although we have just had a new kitchen fitted, we still haven’t bothered with one. The tumble dryer is in the garage and is in constant use in the winter. I would much prefer one to a dishwasher. How on earth do you dry sheets and towels let alone everything else inside the house? It takes me back to my childhood and clothes horses around the fire. No thanks!

I'm probably a bit old fashioned but neither of those would even occur to me - I use a washing line to dry clothes, or a dehimifier if during a wet spell, and the dishwasher in the house is me!
  • Yeah buy a washer dryer and take out a cupboard maybe ?

Swapping the washing machine for a washer-dryer is easy. There's no getting around the fact that WDs are less efficient/more expensive to run and take longer to dry things than standard dryers but it won't be as expensive as a bigger house and if you're buying a 2 bedroom house you probably don't have laundry for 10 people to get through!

Is there really no room for a dishwasher, not even a slimline one? That's probably all you need anyway. Can you share a floorplan or photo so people can look what might be possible?

Over our long landing thingy (railing? banister? not sure what I call it!) in winter. Small stuff on clothes horse in bedroom with window open to air it all. House isn't that cold upstairs, and if it's freezing, the heating will be on anyway. I love the smell of washing! In the garden in summer :)
