No one seems to have mentioned the possibility of bulding an enclosed rear porch. Not ideal, but I know someone who has this, with the machines discreetly hidden when not in use.

    Good point, Dave!

Actually, we will have a similar set up here when finished. Although our new kitchen is fairly large (23' x 17') we didn't want the washing machine in there for noise reasons so we planned to put it in the boiler room (a small attached outbuilding). However, once we'd relocated the new boiler to there (POs had theirs in the third reception room!), there wasn't space for the washing machine too so it will be going in the covered walkway between boiler room and roofed outdoor seating area. We already planned to install an outside tap and Belfast sink there so it's a natural progression, imho!

    Where there's a will, lol!!!

I just bought a tumble dryer after 30 years of home ownership and its in the garage and gets used only in dire straights.

Dishwasher, I had a counter top one in my first house, four place settings, sat next to the sink. Was expensive but worth it for us

This house came with a full sized dishwasher but when I remodelled the kitchen I got rid of it and had a slimline fitted.

You can get all sizes and shapes now, even drawer sized ones

Absolutely. I don't have a microwave or a toaster either. Washing up for one is easy and line dried washing much nicer than tumble dried :-)

I'd agree that line dried is nicer, but it can be difficult to achieve in a British winter, and drying everything on clothes airers can be an issue if you have limited space, and can add to damp problems.

I miss having a proper airing cupboard to finish things off in.
In my last house, I could put sheets and other large items over the banisters on the landing. Now, I don't have banisters (solid wall instead) so everything has to go on airers if the weather is not suitable to hang things up outside. It works, but it is not ideal and if I had less space or more washing could become an issue.

I find washing up for one is more of a chore than for several - if you are cooking from scratch it creates almost as much washing up if you're doing it for one as for 3 or 4, and no-one to share the job with, so you are doing it much more often than if you are part of a larger family.

My parents never had a dishwasher when my siblings and I were growing up. We all helped with that and other chores. Once my youngest sibling left home, my parents bought a dishwasher...

I never bother with dishwashers; I'd rather do it by hand - I think it's less effort. Tumble dryers though, almost essential in the UK!

Tumble dryer wouldn't bother me to much, especially without a family. Also, they don't need to be in a kitchen, they can go in any room.

Dishwasher I wouldn't go without. There would have to be an available space or a cupboard that could be removed to make a space. Hell, I don't even rent a holiday home without one!!

This is why I bowed down to a tumble dryer

I have a huge hot press, size of a single bedroom with loads of racks for storing/finishing drying, then the tank burst and the new tank is so insulated there is no heat from it at all

How on earth do you dry sheets and towels let alone everything else inside the house? It takes me back to my childhood and clothes horses around the fire. No thanks!

Sheets and towels just go over the banisters on the landing, they only take a few hours to dry, especially when the heating is on.

I have a tumble drier but there's so much that I can't/won't put in it I still use an airer in the winter.

  • Personally, no I wouldn't. But this isn't about me!!

Are you happy to wash up? Then you don't need a dishwasher.
Is there outside space for hanging out washing? And radiators/ a fire for drying on wet days? And are you happy to dry your washing like this? Then you don't need a tumble dryer.
I've had a tumble dryer for 35 years - but I still hang clothes outside and only use it to finish them off or if the weather is really grim and I'm sick of having them around the radiators. It's an expensive way of drying clothes straight from the washer.

  • If I intended to stay in the house long term then space for a dishwasher would be a must for me, coincidentally both my washing machine and dishwasher died within a few weeks of each other...

I went online and ordered a washing machine (was originally a washer/dryer) for delivery and by the time I could sort out a day off in the week it was near enough two weeks before it came, easy enough to ask friends/family to do the odd load for me. The dishwasher on the other hand... I ordered one with 48 hour delivery, definitely couldn't be without it for any length of time.
