I think that's the point of them really. Chrome OS is linux based, so they are simple and quick to use right out of the box. Some people like simple, including me.

Our general usage is a few browsing tabs, streaming, and the odd bit of downloading. Occasional word processing etc. For this the chromebook is quicker than our macbook air, which to be honest, just gets used as a spare these days. We do get a lot of use out of the androids apps as well and the 2 years of free 100gb cloud storage.

I understand. Watched a program about that recently.
Though it is very quick and easy to install and the benefit is that you can choose defer the pesky updates that Windows 10 Home users have to suffer.

That option was 33 Pounds more installed by the vendor....or free installed by yourself.

Either way, it's good that you obtained something beyond your initial expectation.
I too would have purchased one if I didn't already have so many devices. :)

Thanks I'm glad you persuaded me anyway,it's a lovely laptop,I wasn't sure how I would take to it to be honest,I had a go on a friends laptop years ago and found using the touchpad awkward but this one is fine, and the 12" form is fine with me.

Has anyone any experience of using a Chromebook for office work such as Word and Excel type?

I realise a CB can't install Microsoft Office, only access online and basic edition unless pay for 365 account. I guess a CB can't use any of the free Office alternatives that can be downloaded to Windows machine

So you are forced to use Google docs or sheets. There now appears to be an offline version, but you need to know what docs in advance you will need from g drive and download them prior to going offline.

I think offline Gmail allows you to open attachments sent to you

Be interested if anyone has used CB for word processing or spreadsheets?
    How did it work offline?

There are several Office suites on the Play store ... presumably they can be downloaded and installed on a CB?

WPS Office has had good reviews in the past, although I've not used it for quite a while now.
