Xbox 360 red ring of death

I need advice on what to do here.
My xbox died today, one year and two weeks since buying from HMV.
I am aware that microsoft extended the warranty on the xbox from one year to two years due to this problem happening too often, but don't know whether this would also apply to HMV returns policy.
I wonder if I would have any rights taking it back to the shop I bought it from and getting a replacement, (rather than MS 'fixing' my current xbox).
Or just contacting microsoft and getting them to repair it.

Easiest option would be for MS to deal with it directly, especially as it's a known fault. HMV's policy is irrelevant as your consumer rights override them. If you wanted to you could demand HMV to repair/replace as you're legally entitled and they are legally responsible (Sale of Goods Act) but they're likely to be stubborn about it so there'll be less effort (or should be) down the manufacturer warranty route."She is quite the oddball. I had the same issue with my Xbox 360 - bought from GAME. Despite quoting the Sale of Goods Act to them they still wouldn't accept they were responsible so in the end I went through Microsoft rather than dragging the whole thing through Trading Standards and potentially court.
It has put me off buying another console from GAME though.0 -

As I said, in principle it's the retailer's responsibility but manufacturers tend to be less hassle. You'd have probably easily won the court case but not worth doing unless MS refused to help as well. It is shocking how much retailers trounce on the basic consumer laws. Whereas the manufacturers are actually going beyond their legal requirements, there's no legal requirement for MS to offer ANY warranty."She is quite the oddball. cheers to both of you.
I'm aware that contacting MS is probably the easiest option, but is it the best.
Would I be better off;
a) going back to the shop and getting a new replacement xbox which should be a newer version than my current xbox and hopefully any hardware errors would be sorted out before they left the factory floor.
or
b) contacting MS, getting them to repair the xbox, however I would still have a year old machine which could be suspect to other parts breaking down in the future.0 -
Well I don't have an Xbox myself but I've seen plenty of threads where people were pretty happy with the way MS dealed with their problems (even if they don't get it right first time) and I think even if the retailer accepted responsibility I think MS would still be quicker and more likely to give you a replacement rather than repair. It's cheaper for a manufacturer to give you a replacement than a retailer in terms of lost sales to them."She is quite the oddball. Cheers, I think I'll give MS a ring tomorrow to tell them the crack, but also get myself to HMV on Tuesday (it's the earliest I'd be able to get there) and try to get the machine swapped.
If they give me hassle (which I expect they will), I've always got MS to fall back on.
Personally I couldn't give a monkeys on how much it costs HMV or MS, as long as I get if fixed and it's less likely to break down in the future.superscaper wrote: »Well I don't have an Xbox myself but I've seen plenty of threads where people were pretty happy with the way MS dealed with their problems (even if they don't get it right first time) and I think even if the retailer accepted responsibility I think MS would still be quicker and more likely to give you a replacement rather than repair. The actual policy change is here but what bugs me is that MS has never really acknowledged it was their fault. Yet now they're actually putting heat sinks on the graphics chipsets, whereas they weren't before.
at least MS have done something about itNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
We had the 3 red lights, telephoned MS they arranged a job number and had a courier pick it up.
All in all it takes about 3 weeks.
They will not change or upgrade the console but for some unlucky people who have had to send their consoles back 2 or 3 times their has been tal of free games etc.
We got 1 months xbox live included when they returned the console but I,d say thats about right because I think we lost a month while it was with them.
I dont think HMV will do anything because it carries a one year warranty and you,ve had it 1 year 2 weeks and the 3 year warranty is only with MS and it is only for the 3 lights problem and nothing else.0 -
My OH has had lots of problems with our Xbox 360. We phoned up MS and they sent a courier to pick it up. It was about 2 -3 weeks and we did not have to pay anything. MS have not made a profit on these xboxes yet because of all the problems. You might be lucky and get a new xbox.cross stitch cafe #90 UFO's 6 to finish in 2013, and loads of new kits to boot
