I am not being pedantic at all. My point from the start of this thread is that if you leave a bag open in a hotel room then the staff will look in the bag as it will basically be impossible not to see what is inside an open bag.

I am relieved that you now realise that I am correct :doh::doh:
Just because a bag is open doesn't mean that you can see all of the contents of same, and you surely must know that. I don't know what your bags are like but I know that ours are always so full fo stuff I can never even find what I am looking for, let alone see it unless it's right at the top.

Yes I agree, you will only see the contents at the top of the bag.

Unfortunately certain posters seem to struggle with the concept of looking into an open bag. I suspect it was because they were never taught that you look with your eyes not with your hands.

And other posters struggle with the concept of asking questions instead of making incorrect assumptions.

The bag was open on the floor and visibly had the wine in it.

I refer you to my earlier post below that deals with 'look'.

When I said 'look' I meant physically put your hands inside the bag and rummage under clothes and remove something.
And you knew very well what I meant.

Unfortunately this thread has now got a bit personal and there is nothing else I really need to add so I will retire gracefully.....

Why - oh why - do some posters throw their toys out of the pram and declare 'I'm out of this thread' and then come back with their two-pennorth?
    Beats me.

Yes you are right. I did make an incorrect assumption that the wine was visible in the bag. Thankfully the OP returned to the thread and clarified the situation.

Either it was complementary or it was a chargeable extra - like the minibar.

If it was complementary the OP was entitled to do with it as they wished.

If it was a chargeable extra, the OP was still entitled to do with it as they wished!

I think the OP wishes that she'd said something at the time.
Unlike one poster who thinks the OP's OH drank the wine and ate the nibbles, I think the hotel has behaved poorly.

Personally, I think if housekeeping is in the habit of rummaging through a guest's bag and removing something, they really do not deserve the right of reply on a review.
It may be one rougue housekeeper that the management know nothing about , and may well have been grateful for the OP to have said something at the time

IMO there are to many tripadvisor reviews that slag off establishments with no come back and no thought of peoples livelihoods
  • Hi. Please can you tell me the name and adress of this hotel.

    Thank you very much

I think most people are in agreement that the OP should have said something at the time.
I've already said that I would have done.

I truly believe that my reviews are fair.
If I'd enjoyed my stay at this hotel, I'd possibly have reviewed it as 4* or maybe even 5*, despite this incident.
As I said way up thread:

I'd leave a review of the hotel on Tripadvisor and mention that, not make it the main focus of the review (especially if the hotel was good in all other aspects) but if the management monitor TA reviews, the fact that housekeeping are in the habit of going into people's personal baggage might come as a surprise to them too.
But it really is inexcusable behaviour to remove something from a guest's bag.

Don't places have right of reply to reviews?

    They do on tripadvisor.

I have found that some places that get a lot of bad reviews never seem to reply.
