E.ON Moving from economy 7 meter to single rate

  • It depends on the circumstances SpanishBlue. The fee I mentioned applies to non-essential meter exchanges.

Essential changes include replacing faulty meters or where the meter has reached the end of its guaranteed lifespan. There are no charges for this work and you can ask to go from Economy 7 to single rate. Similarly, as Raxiel says, there are no fees for fitting smart meters and you can also change from two to one rate. The same applies when going from a prepayment to a credit meter too.

Did any of the above apply to your meter exchange SpanishBlue? If not, what were the circumstances?

Thanks for your reply Malc. To cut a long story short, originally, I never received the promised call back/email to confirm a date for me to be switched over to a smart meter.

After several unsuccessful attempts to contact E.ON via email/Chat and phone, I finally spoke to a helpful lady who said there were no available Smart meter appointments in my area in the near future but she was happy to arrange a change of meter for me from duel rate to single rate.

As I say, I was not informed of any charge, so I hope one won't appear on my account in the future!

You're welcome SpanishBlue. Happy to help and I'm sorry you've had problems contacting us. Most of our contact channels haven't been up to scratch of late and we realise this isn't good enough. As I mentioned in another thread, we're working to put this right including training more advisors and looking at different working methods.

It sounds like we've fitted a traditional meter as an interim measure until smart meters are available for your property. In these circumstances, I wouldn't expect there to be a charge as we're not able to fit the meter you want as part of the overall smart roll-out. I'm guessing but, as you weren't told of a charge prior to agreeing the exchange, I'd certainly challenge anything that might appear later. Hopefully this won't be necessary.

  • I understand your issues with economy 7. My Daughter has the same problem. She bought a small property 12 months ago with electric economy 7 (no gas in the area). She turned the storage heaters on for one week (along with the emersion heater) and the cost was amazing so she has not used either of them since. She works away a lot and is barely home so most of the time the heat would be totally wasted, is uncontrollable and what is worse she cannot turn the water on at random when required. It has to have been turned on the night before. In any case by the time she comes home to use the water it is cold again so she boils a kettle or uses the shower and plugs in a small mobile heater when she needs heat. The storage heaters and the emersion are the only things that work on economy 7 (11pm and 6am). She no longer uses either. Hence the one night meter (economy 7 meter) never moves. Everything else is on the standard meter.

She is on a deemed contract with EDF who refuse to believe that the one meter does not move/is not used. She continually sends in her meter readings but EDF refuse to use her actual readings. EDF massively over-estimate her bills.

I'm just wondering can you change the other way from Standand to E7 meters without having storage heaters and is there a charge? Or do supplier now fit smart meters upon a change of meter request.

    Hello wakeupalarm.

With us and provided you've an Economy 7 meter, you can change either way. From Economy 7 to single rate and single rate to Economy 7.

There are no charges when changing between any of our tariffs and, if you've an online account, you can go from single to two rate and vice versa through our website in just a few clicks.

If you've a single rate meter and would like Economy 7 prices, the meter would need to be changed. For a traditional meter, there would be a charge of £64.76 (including VAT) for this work. This is because it would be seen as a non-essential meter exchange.

We could certainly look to see if we're able to fit a smart meter. We're currently rolling smart meters out across the country but they're not available everywhere yet. It depends on things like the region, type of property, strength of the mobile phone signal and the existing metering set-up. There are also certain local difficulties that don't become clear until a technician visits.

It's best to talk to our specialist smart teams. They'll be happy to check and book a mutually convenient appointment should all be okay. At this point, you would need to let them know you wanted Economy 7. Otherwise a like for like exchange would be arranged. There's no charge for this work.

Hope this explains wakeupalarm. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.
