tesco overcharged me..

  last week tesco reduced the ariel washing powder price (30 washes) from £4.78 to £2.39. considering we use the washing machine twice daily because of the kids i orderd 20 boxes in addition to a couple of grocery items and i used a voucher to take £10 off the final price and the whole bill came to £45 which i paid by credit card. the next day my wife recieved the delivery which included only 11 boxes of ariel and other substitutes. she rejected the substitutes and accepted the rest and i thought that the bill will be around the £27 mark but i was shocked today to find that my card was charged £88.37....i am really fuming ...it sounds that they charged me more than double the regular price for ariel and not the sale price. i am going to call these b***ds this morning ...i did not need this mess over the weekend

  • I think the Double the Difference rule applies to on-line shopping. One of the more experience board members will tell you for sure though.

  • I don't think the same sales are online as in the store... But I could be wrong...

Did you take a note of the offer end date on the washing powder? The price you pay is the price of the goods instore on the day your order is picked and delivered. For example, if the washing powder offer finished on Wednesday, but your shopping wasn't delivered until Friday, you won't get the special offer price even if you ordered before Wednesday.

Your order is picked in store then the full amount is charged to your card. If you return any items such as the substitutes, the driver has to take them back to the store, and the cost for them will be refunded back onto your card.

Hope that is of use in trying to work out why you were overcharged.

thanks guys for the reply...i ordered on sunday evening and recieved goods on monday afternoon so it is unlikely that pricess have changed in less than 12 hours...if the offer price has ended why did they only sent 11 boxes and not the whole order (20 boxes) at full price...and the full price before the offer was £4.78 but they charged me £5.98.....then when i buy over the internet this is a contract between me and the seller and they cant change the price at time of delivery. i also found that they charge me for the substitutes we rejected (it was returned on monday and they charged me on following saturday - £25)

The offer could have ended at midnight Sunday, so you will be charged Monday's price.
if the offer price has ended why did they only sent 11 boxes and not the whole order (20 boxes)

The order is picked off the shop floor as if you were really doing your shopping. If there were only 11 boxes on the shelf, they will only pick the 11 boxes and substitute the other 9 boxes.
then when i buy over the internet this is a contract between me and the seller and they cant change the price at time of delivery.

That isn't true. The T&C's you signed up to when you opened your internet account will explain how this works.

The price on screen is a guide price only. They cannot give an exact price as offers change depending on your delivery date which can be up to 3-4 weeks in the future, and they cannot give exact prices on items like veg, cheese etc., where the price depends on the exact weight purchased.
i also found that they charge me for the substitutes we rejected (it was returned on monday and they charged me on following saturday - £25)

They will charge you for the substitutes initially. The do the shopping instore, charge you card and then it is delivered. They don't know which substitutes you want and don't want at this point. The returned substitutes will be refunded to your card when the driver gets back to the store. As with all banking transactions it may take a few days for the original charge and the refund to hit your account.

Have you rang customer services to find out what is going on? They are usually quite helpful when I've had to ring them.

thanks becles for the reply...i phoned them this morning and i spoke to the most unhelpful customer service guy you could think of...he was talking to me as if i was a comlpete idiot (i am a university graduate and i have been shopping on the internet for many years)...i put the phone down and i phoned them again and this time a nicehelpful lady answered and admitted that there was a clearly a mistake (they charged my card 5 days after delivery...they must have known by then that i rejected the substitutes)...she promised to call me back this afternoon with answers...if she does not iam off to my local tesco to throw all the items they sent back and i will never shop at tesco again (it is their loss as i used to spend nearly £400/month at tesco)

    2 washes a day x7 days in a week = 14 washes
    4 weeks in a month = 56 washes
    12 months = 672

Although I'm jealous that the OP has somewhere to store all that!
It aint over til I've done singing....
