Spent the day at the beach with dd, her DH and the dogs. DH has cooked tea so the only flying done here by me is the washing up.

  • It took me nearly two hours due to a complete inability to think straight, but I did the online order and I think I've got enough food coming to cover the next fortnight, one way or another.

There will be lots of portioning up and freezing involved, so I'd better swish over the counters and make sure everything is clear for the delivery.

No point having an early night tonight, though, as some muppet over the back is having a party with his little mates and although the godawful R&B and rap/trap/claptrap has just been switched off along with the flashing lights, they are all very obviously both stoned and drunk. And loud.

I'm going to watch DH play softball today, whatever that is, so flying may be limited again.

    Have a great day everyone.

In Lymington staying with lovely but diy-challenged BIL to help put up a new shed. Arrived yesterday afternoon and examined the site he'd cleared from 2 old sheds. He acknowledged it wasn't exactly level - 1 shed had been on a now ancient and uneven concrete base, its neighbour on 4 paving slabs 2inches lower. He thought we'd put down a layer of sand to even things out. After lifting slabs, putting soil and sand, raking it, treading it and turning the slabs through 90degrees to actually resemble the size of the new shed, Mr N and I agreed it needed 4 joists as a base which could be properly levelled. Retired indoors to check local timber merchant web site. I expressed surprise they didn't reserve the joists on line but what do i know. They left at 8 this morning and returned half an hour later as the place didn't actually open on a Sunday. More googling. I suggested that while they were out at more distant location, they bought some paint if there weren't any joists so at least we could do something. BIL had also not noticed the shed sections weren't pre-drilled, so Mr N hadn't brought a drill. Off they went. I started Xmas-paper wrapping the charity boxes. Back they came £100 light with a drill, joists, paint and brushes. Watch this space. Glad I'm moving on to mum's tomorrow.
Remember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.

Sounds just like OH and me trying to do DIY, Narco.

I'm finishing off the last three monster pots on the last section of the sundeck that needed ministrations. It's been a very long and much bigger job than I'd intended (I was going to leave half of it until next year, and some of it wasn't going to be done at all, if I'm honest) but it does look really smashing now. It's taken me 25 years to get the yard looking as I always wanted it and I'm thrilled to bits with it. My back aches and I'm going to need a bath later, but the kittens have had all day outside in the yard and haven't tried to escape once, and the house is looking fair. This is the first time all of it has come together and it feels, at long last, like Hovel to Haven really is coming together.

Having a cleaner for two hours a week may have [STRIKE]something[/STRIKE] a lot to do with it.
    Better is good enough.
  • I actually got to use the fancy-schmancy vacuum cleaner. Well, after I tracked down the various tools from their hiding places, I did. One behind the linen bin, one on top of the microwave, one under the sofa and one, amazingly enough, clipped neatly into its intended storage on the vacuum. I'm willing to bet that's because he's never used it.

Floor needs mopping, but I'm technically banned from doing things like that - he'd have a fit if he knew I was vacuuming the stairs as that requires coming back down them carrying the vacuum, as it's a bit heavy and unwieldy with the hose connected (and he doesn't trust the Idiot Cat not to try and kill me in the process). Mind you, as I managed to tread on my trouser leg on the way down and nearly tangled myself up in the process, he probably has a point somewhere...

Food delivery is due within the hour and I'm now realising the things I forgot to put on the order.

WM on with fleece jacket, t-shirt, socks and trousers for the Dreaded W*rk Thing tomorrow. I'll go over the counters and scrub them properly after I've portioned up the foods and bunged them in the freezer; I have ordered a chicken which I was intending to hack up, but I think I'll just shove it in the oven and make use of cooked meat instead, which cuts my chopping-and-freezing down to dealing with a trout, some Rhubarb, a pack and a half of butter (sneakily hurls the vile 'butter' spread into the recycling) and some Butternut Squash. As I've got two bags of flour to decant into [strike]insect proof[/strike] attractive glass jars, I'll bung a loaf into the BM whilst things are all a bit messy and then get the bleach back into action.

I've also rinsed over the bathroom tiles again, as being in there at just the right time highlighted that I've repeatedly missed the ones that are at ceiling level. Not going to start climbing in the bath to scrub them, so I went completely non environmentally friendly, used a foaming spray and my thumb over the end of the shower hose to create some water pressure.

Once the work clothes are drying, I'm going to shove the fake fur sofa throw in as the felines have been using it for comfort whilst we've been away, so it's twice as furry as when we left.

I've still got a couple of hotspots to deal with, namely the coffee table, my kitchen table and the counter belonging to the catfood cupboard, but they aren't particularly urgent and I don't want to wake up tomorrow morning feeling unable to move when I'm bound to be given tons of impossibly urgent things to do tomorrow.

I'm thinking again about raiding the finances for a deep clean, though. Not this month, but maybe next.

Has anybody here ever arranged one?

  • BM whirring away, chicken in oven, shopping all put away and washing on the line.

I'm really hungry now, but didn't order anything I could just snack on. Which is probably for the best, as I've just realised how much extra tummy I have compared to July. Better to stick to proper food, I think - and congratulate myself for buying stretchy trousers and tops for work when I last forced myself to buy anything for the most miserable part of the week. :)

I now know what softball is because DH had signed me up for the team today. Going to spend rest of day relaxing and thinking of ways to get my own back.

See you on the next thread.
