Smart tv

  • Just work out how long a cable you need and buy it from Amazon. It’s easy enough to discreetly wire round the edge of the room and far more reliable and better quality than wireless options. I’ve got an extended twin satellite feed, an long Ariel feed and long Ethernet cable. This now means I can have the tv anywhere in the room. It works a treat and it’s one less thing running off the wireless router.

    Hi

    1. With those SMART TV units in the market, when it says it comes with Freeview or Freesat does this mean i can expect to watch Freeview or Freesat as it is or do i connect to any thing?

    2. So if i have to connect to the aerial, will this have to be wired or will there be a wireless option?

    Regards

I would recommend a trip to Richer Sounds and have a chat with their very knowledgeable team, infact I wouldn't buy a tv from anywhere else.

I would recommend reading through the following website, it'll give you a more complete idea of what it is you're asking rather than piecemeal answers on here.

When a TV says it comes with Freeview or Freesat, it means a Freeview or Freesat TUNER. You need to plug a Freeview tuner into an aerial, and a Freesat tuner to a satellite.

For question 2 there's not really a wireless option for getting a signal from the aerial to the TV, if you don't have either sets of cables, consider getting it done, or, if you're in a good reception area, you might be able to use an indoor aerial.

None of the above has anything to do with the TV being Smart.
Being smart means it'll have apps on it, and connect to the internet (over WiFI for pretty much any modern TV now) to watch programmes etc. The most obvious example is BBC iPlayer.

You COULD buy a Smart TV and just watch internet stuff, but you'll be very restricted.

You need to extend the cable. If you're moving your room around anyway, make your own very long cable - plug into the wall aerial socket at one end, run it around the skirting boards, and into the back of the TV. Try to keep it good quality as the signal gets a bit weaker with length.
You can get wireless transmitter & receiver things

No - this is for sending the already received picture - it would plug into the SCART socket of a Freeview box, for example, and the receiver would plug into the SCART socket of a TV in another room. And they can be flakey to use. No good for OP's situation.
That is helpful to be aware as i was worried there wouldn't be an option. Hope any of you who have used a reliable type can suggest the brand.

    No, see above.
the query is if a higher resolution TV will make a lower resolution source (online Youtube videos for example) worse if the source isn't 4K

Not really, no. When people talk about HD TVs making SD content look bad, and now 4K TVs making HD or SD content look bad, the real reason is because the SIZE of the TV has gone up, at the same distance. So you see more detail, which is exactly what you want when there's a good picture, but you don't want it for a poor one!

The extension from your existing port is by far the best solution for you. And if you have any questions about your TV, please ask us here BEFORE buying!

    very very very helpful

thank you for saying that the web operating system is a reliable one (i was slightly torn between the terms used by the manufacturers for their SMART systems)

What's wrong with the current TV that you need/want to change?

You can make any TV smart with a cheap box.

What size and budget are you looking at.

what angles do your viewers sit.

    is the room bright

what do you watch, types of programs and sources.

Do you know what HDR is? would you need/want it

These are the things you need to be thinking about before brands.

fair enough but just curious if there is an opinion about the operating system

the old TV is small, not functioning properly any more and has multiple screen damages (this is a very old thin screen so no i am not just changing for no reason)
40 to 43 inches , probably to a maximum of 350 for budget (probably try to find a bargain this public holiday weekend or through refurbished display units which come with warranty, for example hughes electricals provide one year)
    angle will be straight facing
the room will be bright yes (4 sides of the lounge and 1 is completely windowed), however not so much of glare as no light faces the TV directly or the viewer directly
i am mostly an online person so i think i will extend the aerial/satellite wires later

so LG's webos is fine, what about Panasonic's or Sony's?

I bought a "smart" TV many years ago.
The next year, the manufacturer stopped supporting the smart bit so all the apps have had no upgrades since new. And none work now.
So I wouldn't buy a smart TV for the smart bit ever again. I'll buy a new TV based on screen type/size/price and any smart bits that come with it will be ignored.
I use my set top box for any smarts I need from a TV (which is just a few streaming channels)
