problem is, a lot of the standard diesel engines will be faster 0-60 than the rx8. was one of the downsides of it, even though i loved mine, it wasnt that fast in a straight line, and to get the most of it you had to really work the engine. (and then get like 15mpg)
IME, the RX8 can't be driven economically, it doesn't enjoy it. But if you thrash it, economy doesn't go down much. It's meant to be worked hard, and it's about handling (light engine, low down, far back), not ultimate speed - remember the RX7 was turbocharged and the RX8 lost that.
You can have more fun on the road in an RX8 than in an M3.Aren't they good for over 200BHP? Even with the weight of a rotary engine it ought to go reasonably well with only a 2 seater body.
So much wrong-ness! It has either 190 (5-speed) or 230 BHP (6 speed), rotary engines are LIGHTER than piton ones, and the car contains FOUR seats (sortof hidden, with sortof 4 doors). But that is it, an unreliable performance car.
(potentially)
I've had 2 3 series coupes, an E36 and E46, both 6 cyl petrol, and whilst they had plenty of benefits, the RX8 is so very different to drive. Light on the nose, LSD. Incomparable, considering they're both 4 seat coupes. Never mind diesels.0 -
MX5 owner here, I get the same. I don't exceed the speed limit though, I just wait til we get to a twisty section or with most drivers just any kind of bend at all on a single carriage A road and go round it at the speed limit whilst they slow down for it. A lot of these planks can't actually drive round corners.
You don't even need a car with particularly good handling to show them up. I've done it several times on the bendy roads around here in very ordinary motors.
Needs a second much more advanced level of driving licence for cars above a certain power to weight ratio, as it is with bikes.0 -

Norton built Wankel motorcycles in the 80s and 90s - sold them to police forces and won an Isle of Man TT with one :eek:I need to think of something new here...0 -
Correct -the NSU Wankelspider in the 60s and then the Ro80 - which would be considered a small exec saloon by today's marketing sectors. Disappeared when NSU were bought by VW and merged into what became Audi (waits for westernpromise to appear....)

Once the PPR is up, I'm sure he'll be all over it.0 -

Mazda RX8
BMW
Haha funny how you have to compare the latest generation 3 series BMW with a THREE litre 6 cylinder engine and that too probably with a dual clutch automatic to a Mazda RX8 that was released in 2003. Also you do realise that 3 litre top of the range 3 series it probably nearly twice the cost of the RX8 when it was new?
Most diesels you see on the road aren't performance BMW 3 litre engines are they? They are usually 1.6 or 2.0 diesels. Also I am pretty confident that an RX8 will still beat that 3 litre diesel dual clutch beamer around a track.0 -

And dark matters back.
Tell you what when you get an RX8 we'll have a track day and I'll be quicker than you in an oil burner. Bring your A3 along and I'll use that. :rotfl:0 -
Nowadays I drive a Motability Hyundai iX20, which to my pleasant surprise has 125 bhp in a small car, twin cam and 24 valves. it's an auto box (left leg u/s) but it's 6-speed and I love it.
However, at 73 I have been a workshop foreman/garage manager in a Classic Car garage, after 12 years Army service as an aircraft technician, during which I owned several high performance cars. I have owned, tested and driven many such cars over the years and I was an amateur rally driver for a few years.
But the most fun I have had in a car for some years, after several Motability SUV's, has been in the iX20. I love the faces of certain Boy Racers when they tailgate me in their noisy boom boxes, and I boot the iX20, to fade away from them. It hurts my MPG a bit, so I don't do it often, but I also enjoy the sight of these drivers, trying to stay with me around a series of bends and up a certain steep local hill.
I know it's petty, but I really do hate being tailgated and the attempts to intimidate. In normal driving I am quite unbothered by any overtakers who do so sensibly, without fuss.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
