You still have to give a meter reading if it's a card meter, sorry!! Most of the time the usage isn't the same as the amount paid, so they have to have a meter reading to prove that you've paid for the correct amount. If you contact Lovell with a prove it letter, they will provide you with the last bill, and the date of connection and disconnection. It looks like you haven't contacted them to tell them that you've moved out, and the new tenants have carried on using your account with your key, so their usage and payments have been yours as far as EON are concerned.

This won't be statute barred until the date of the last meter reading. You could do with getting hold of the bills to see if they are estimate, customer or actual to see if backbilling applies, Lovell will do this if you ask them as they are the ones who now own your debt.

I'm having the same problem with them, but I told my energy company I was moving and they didn't update their system.
  • ok , I informed eon when I moved house , they may have asked for readings , I do not remember (7 yrs ago) I was told to leave keys/cards etc and a new account was opened (PAYG) at new house , it seems that eon have failed to get meter readings for 20mths , when I was resident , they used to call / take readings about every 6 mths or so

"This won't be statute barred until the date of the last meter reading. "

there hasnt been a "last meter reading" from what I can see after oct 2011 , simply an estimate based on a broken/smashed meter 20 mths later

if the new tenants used my old key , why was this not recorded ?

So sorry, it's not statute barred from the date of the last meter reading, it's the date of the last bill. You need to contact Lovell with a prove it letter, they will send you the last bill, which will have dates on it. You then reply saying you'd moved out on XXX date and you're not responsible for this, and it's down to them to prove that the bill belongs to you. Lucky you weren't with EDF, they didn't take a meter reading for the whole of the time that I was with them (2 years I think). If you were still registered as a customer it won't have mattered who uses your key. When you top it up, you're not asked for a name and address in the shop, are you?
  • thank you , that makes sence , there is only an "estimated" bill dated june 2013 (I think) this was because the meter was damaged and presumably unreadable

Eon knew my new address but yet did not send this at the time , a prive it to lowell it is , although just by checking credit files (as they have done to trace me) they can see that I moved

They sound just as 'efficient' as EDF. Lowell were more reasonable then my energy company, they purchased the debt for pennies in the pound so they won't be too sad if I don't pay all of it. I really would just send them a 'prove it' letter and see what they come back with. If they produce a bill which is dated after you moved out just tell them that you weren't living there. They may request a copy of your new tenancy agreement as proof, so remember that it's down to them to prove when you moved out, it's not down to you.

Mine statute bars in November (date of the last bill). I'm pretty disgusted with EDF and am tempted to go to the Ombudsman.
  • well a twist in the tail
I forwarded a copy of my new tenancy agreement to eon , and received a call back from a helpful guy

seems that on my file is a call I made in early nov 2011 stating I had moved and including my meter readings , the operative did not close the account

much "touching forlocks" and apologies from eon and lowel will be told to stop

I have to expect a letter with a financial apology stuck to it

Result, but did you ask the helpful guy if there was any credit left on the account when it should have been closed?

Did they also indicate whether they would remove any defaults or negative marks which may have been placed on your credit file(s) as a result of the fiasco they created?
  • there was no credit , ok about £2 on each meter as they were pay as you go type meters - that's been my argument all along , no top up = no electric or gas

I have made my point that I will be VERY VERY angry if lowell report a default , I only have access to clearscore and noddle - monthly updates , and as of now nothing showing

the guy actually sounded sorry , and he did say that the arrogant woman I spoke to in pre pay resolution , could c;early see that I had closed the account in early nov 2011 , but with held that from me and asked for documents that were not available .

the landlord was eager to turn the house into student accommodation and the local council set a date after which they would not allow change of use , he gave me a legal eviction notice , i gave this to my local housing assoc and they housed me ASAP , because of new data protection laws this document from sept/oct 2011 has now been destroyed

much as I am against the american culture of compensation , the guy has clearly stated an offer will be made and if I disagree it will go to the ombudsman , I have spent about 4 hrs on the phone over the week , 12 emails and a drive to housing assoc , so I think I may laugh at a £10

Do you have anything? Email from then, a utility bill with the new address, insurance docs? The burden of proof is on them to prove you owe the bill, not on you to prove that you don't.
  • the fact that I have a letter in front of me from eon saying "welcome to your new home " dated 25th oct 2011 , I have other bills , but not dating back to 2011
