Hi everyone, it is now 15 days since I made this journey. we have had two weekends and a bank holiday since.

Should I have had a letter through the post by now? Is it 14 working days or 14 days or do they have longer to issue?

    Thanks:)

Providing you're the RK, you're home and dry.

Yes I am the registered keeper and my address is correct, am on the electoral role and I have lived here for 8 years!

I guess I was slow enough most the time apart from the odd overtake where I had to speed up to get past in the outside lane with other cars up my rear!
  • Don’t be so sure, I had a nip notice reminder 4 weeks after the offence, technically they don’t have to do that. After checking and ringing the fines office, I was assured that the none delivery of a nip within 14 days meant nothing.

The way it works is They assert the nip was posted and to refute reception then you have to go to court and make an declaration which resets it back to the 14 day period. You then have to submit a defence if you have any.... none delivery is not a defence unless the date on the nip is > 14 days and they’re not that stupid.

No you can’t rely on nothing being received within 14 days. This was West Mercia btw which covers m42/m5.

Not any more. It has been widely advertised by various forces that the cameras now remain active at all times on many stretched of smart motorway.

Our local force has stated the cameras can be activated at any time for operational purposes. They aren't necessarily on 24/7 regardless of speed limit in force.

    Hi everyone, quick question.

Went on a drive today along the M42 and was on it between junction 2 and 6.

Quite a lot of cameras, i mostly drove at 75-77mph but when overtaking in the outside lane it gout up to 85mph to get past cars before moving back over.

I slowed down whenever I went across camera lines in the motorway to about 75-77mph and under.

I am very worried now about getting a ticket and points on my license. How quick do these letters normally arrive?

Thank you for any advice :)

When there is no reduced limit signs operating they aren’t functioning. I drive on the M42 most days and have been through the cameras at 90, never had a ticket. They aren’t on every gantry, as you pass under look over to the right and if you see cameras on the other side then they will be your side too.

Not all the gantries that have cameras have ones covering both carriageways on the M42. I have seen this as I use that road daily.

Really? I didn’t know that. I swore they were continual across both lanes.
    Thanks for the heads up.

M42 had all the OVERHEAD Gatsos removed (like a lot of managed sections) but these were only active when the limits were on.

The only enforcement now is a few gantries have the side mounted HADECS..

    roadside-hadecs-speed-camera.jpg

These ARE active all the time although set quite high at the moment, its thought about 79 true speed so at least 80 indicated on most cars as all speedos over-read.

I am categorical on this as I have seen them trigger when the limits have not been switched on many times - I use this road vastly.
Looking at the other side of the road is pointless as they are installed on one side only at most locations.

You can tell one is ahead if your paying attention because there is a triple CCTV camera on a pole by the side of the road some way before the HADEC gantry, its used to take a photo of the signs to go with the HADEC picture of your car so you cannot claim the signs were not working!

(some managed sections of other motorways (like M5) have a similar setup but because they don't have gantries, just a side mounted sticky-out sign, their is only a single camera CCTV to photo the sign for verification)

And who thinks that? There’s more than one camera partnership involved.

Having just got a NIP from Warwickshire Police about speeding on the M42 ("Southbound Gantry 6500B" as you approach J7A) I can say that at least this camera was active even though the gantry didn't have a restriction in place and that this behaviour has changed or is inconsistent.

I used to use the M42 and M6 regularly, but haven't for years... back then I regularly went into three-digit speeds through the gantries late at night when there was little traffic and no restrictions displayed, without a single ticket.

This is the second time in two weeks that I've travelled southbound on the M42 at roughly the same speed and only in the second case did the camera flash. The slight difference in the second case was that I was in the left lane and changed to the third lane from the left so I could get off on the M6, whereas previously I was in the third lane already when going through the gantry; I wouldn't expect the lane used to make a difference though. The camera is a HADECS3 type as listed on the Warwickshire Police website for 6500B (link below), here's the exact gantry on Google Street View (link below).

Seems I'm not allowed to post links "as a new user", so the URLs are here for you to copy and paste:

Enabling speed cameras when the gantries have no speed restrictions in place seems entirely unnecessary to me on a motorway :(
