M42 cameras?
Hi everyone, quick question.
Went on a drive today along the M42 and was on it between junction 2 and 6.
Quite a lot of cameras, i mostly drove at 75-77mph but when overtaking in the outside lane it gout up to 85mph to get past cars before moving back over.
I slowed down whenever I went across camera lines in the motorway to about 75-77mph and under.
I am very worried now about getting a ticket and points on my license. How quick do these letters normally arrive?
Thank you for any advice

I think you'll find they are average speed cameras so slowing down just for the camera isn't that effective.0

I think you'll find they aren't.
If you're the registered keeper of the vehicle, any Notice of Intended Prosecution must be served on you within 14 days of the alleged offence. If you're not, it could take considerably longer.0 -
The M42 (or that bit of it at least) is covered by a smart traffic management system. Essentially the speed limit goes up and down depending on the traffic levels. If the signs are off, so are the cameras.
If you didn't get a flash, you should be okay. But I would advise you to slow down just a tad. At 77+ you are pushing your luck not to get caught. If they had a mobile camera out they can (and do) prosecute you at less then 77 mph. The idea that the camera has to give you 10% is a myth.0 -
I think the overhead gantry cameras are only operational when a speed other than the national limit is showing.
The ones to watch for are the new cameras on the side of the gantries in the managed motorway sections which are active all the time and are slaved to the overhead signs.

So wildly exceed 70 past them, day or night, and you can expect a NIP... Someone rushing to the hospital in Worcester was fined £1k+ recently0 -

Bolded bit - Do not whatever you do rely on this. Police forces are now using these cameras to enforce NSL when no speed limit shown. It's happening on M5 very close to the M42 in the same police force area (West Mercia). If there is a camera, you should assume it is always on, not the opposite, so this is poor advice.
While they can prosecute for 71 in a 70, there haave been no proven cases of this via camera detection. Pepipoo would love to see evidence saying otherwise, but there are many cases on pepipoo where people have had NIPs for gantry cameras where there is no speed limit shown.0 -

The overhead ones on the M4 around Bristol and on M5 in same area were switched on for NSL before they were replaced by the ones on the side of gantries.
Note also that the side ones don't have the markings on the road in my experience of driving on M5/M6. They aren't required for enforcement in any case.0 -

1. "If the signs are off, so are the cameras" This certainly isn't true on other managed motorways, so I doubt if it is the case on the M42.
2. This is not a myth. The police have guidelines http://library.college.police.uk/docs/appref/ACPO-Speed-Enforcement-Guidance.pdf which indicate that enforcement in a 70 mph limit should start at 79 mph. Police officers are allowed discretion, but the camera system is largely automated and will follow guidelines rigidly. Have you any evidence to suppor the 77 mph suggestion?0 -
I dont take any camera as been off, I saw a plod with a radar gun stood in a bush on a bridge on the A417. Plus now i gather they are using unmarked vans as well. Its one massive cash cow end of. Yet when we got unwanted visitors in our house a few years ago they couldnt be bothered to come and even take a finger print or show any interest whatsoever bar a incident number.0

Anyway, it safer to stick to the limits and then you don't have to be worried whether you will get a ticket or not.0 -
The APCO guidelines are just that - guidelines. They don't have to be adhered to. Also, APCO doesn't exist any more.
ACPO is no more, but their guidelines are still current, and also used by the CPS.0
