Thanks for the reply.
Am I correct to assume from your reply that if E.ON installed the SMETS1 meter then it is E.ON who are responsible for ensuring that the meter is added into the Data Communications Company (DCC) database to make them SMETS2 compatible regardless of who the customer is now receiving their energy from?To be honest youravinalarrrf, I'm not sure how this will all be done so I've just asked the question. Will let you know as soon as I receive an answer.
Malc
Morning youravinalarrrf and I've received a reply to the question I asked yesterday as above.
If we installed the meter and the customer has changed supplier, it'll be the new supplier's responsibility to do any necessary updates.
Hope this answers your question youravinalarrrf. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

Malc,
Thanks for the reply at least that clarifies E.ON's position.
Once again I had hoped common sense would have prevailed with these Smart Meter upgrades but sadly it doesn't look to be the case in this instance.
I'm not sure my current supplier either knows or cares if it's a Smart Meter or not as a lot of energy suppliers still appear to be living in the dark ages hoping the mess they've created between themselves just goes away.0 -

I think you are being a bit unfair to many of these (usually) smaller providers. Why would they want to install at cost, a SMETS1 meter which will become dumb after switching? The people SOLELY responsible for the mess we are in re smart metering are successive Governments, who drove the Industry to push ahead with a technology not fit for purpose!!
I still think that the chances of many of these early meters being upgraded is between zero and nil -they will need to be replaced.0 -

60% of people never switch suppliers so your SMETS1 meters are fine with them
British Gas have been fitting smart meters earlier than all the other suppliers from around 2006 so many of their loyal customers have had the convenience of smart metering for over a decade. The majority of SMETS1 smart meters are doing a good job, its not all a massive mess up.
Personally as a yearly switcher I will hold out if possible for working SMETS20 -

It would be interesting to know how many of those long term customers have actually got the SMETS1 meters (or even SMETS2) or whether it has been better for installation targets to put them in the regular switchers. Anyone know a source for those figures?
Thankfully when I said yes a few years ago to a smart meter (& expressed shock at my electricity meter being replaced by the old style) my lack of mobile signal ruled me out. My knowledge, thanks to this site, has improved & I am now waiting for SMETS3.0 -
Thank you for the reply Malc; and as linked by Nick.
Any timetable on when SMETS1 equipment will be updated (once changed suppliers)? I have had it confirmed by EDF that mine is SMETS1, but will be disappointed once we change to yourselves as it`ll lose functionality.0 -

No worries HalloweenJack. Happy to help.
I can't speak for other suppliers but, as far as we're concerned, we're looking, where possible, to update our SMETS1 meters by the end of next year. We haven't a start date yet.
When you've switched to us, we'll assume responsibility for the update and let you know once we're able to carry it out. We won't need to visit as the work will be done remotely.
I suspect, immediately after the switch, the meter will lose many of its smart features. Hopefully, we'll be able to restore these functions as we begin updates as above. If not, we'll offer to replace the meter with a SMETS2 so you'll have all the current smart features.
Hope this explains HalloweenJack and thanks for joining us.

Hi paragon909. I am in the same boat, I don't want a Smart Meter. I am already with EDF, but if I switch to their 18/19 tariff the terms and conditions small print says I agree to a smart meter being fitted when they are in my area. The fitting of these meters is supposed to be optional. Will find out what the Energy Regulator thinks of this.0
