That reply is about as useful as a chocolate teapot!

A suitable answer for a rather daft and panicky question.

We didn't need visas to travel to Western Europe before we joined the Common Market. Why would we now?

Edit:- although an "authorisation to travel" scheme, such as those operated by the US, Canada, and Australia, would make a lot of sense, both for the UK and the EU.

We probably won't which is why I said "the possibility of".
We have no idea what will happen hence stating the only thing that could really change if anything.

The Euro elite may wish to punish us for leaving, however they also have to balance that against their Mediterranean countries who's main economy is keep afloat by tourism, much of it from the UK.
Flights will fly, my thinking is that they will
    A) introduce a visa type system and charge around £10 / Euro10 for each traveller or
    B) put a charge on to the Airlines (which will be passed on in fares).

If A then it will make no difference if you wait, if B then you most likely will save by booking now.
Of course I am not a Euro elite minister so I may be wrong but I bet I'm not far off.

Well there is also the possibility of a complete impasse, and no flights between the UK and the EU (as these are covered by an EU agreement), but I don't think that is at all likely.

There is also a possibility that European ATC may choose to be bloody awkward and delay UK flights, even with an agreement in place.

The French in particular are not noted for caring much about behaving lawfully. Look at the regular blockades at cross channel ports.

If anything 'bad' happens to to British passport holders travelling anywhere, then it'll be met with fierce Reciprocity. Nobody want's that.

In which case it would be tit for tat

Different situation entirely. Whilst the EEC existed then it only covered a handful of countries (6 before we joined along with Ireland and Denmark) and there was no common immigration area like there is now with Schengen, so even within the EEC you had to go through immigration at every border. Some other countries outside the EEC you needed visas for, and of course you had the Eastern Bloc, where travel was a lot more difficult than it is now.

Hopefully we won't need visas to go to EU countries after we have left, but it is certainly possible.
