Whilst the EEC existed then it only covered a handful of countries (6 before we joined along with Ireland and Denmark) and there was no common immigration area like there is now with Schengen, so even within the EEC you had to go through immigration at every border. Some other countries outside the EEC you needed visas for, and of course you had the Eastern Bloc, where travel was a lot more difficult than it is now.
Hopefully we won't need visas to go to EU countries after we have left, but it is certainly possible.
Not entirely.
We never needed visas to travel to Western Europe.
You didn't even need a proper passport to visit France. And we allow EU citizens to enter the UK without passports.
Eastern Europe was under Soviet control, and those countries required visas.
The world is moving away from Visas. The US is a prime example.
Of course it is possible that the EU could require us to have visas if they want to be bloody awkward, but why would they?0 -
This has got to be a wind up...
Not at all. Google will show you that many airlines have expressed concern about selling tickets for after March due to the uncertainty.
To answer the OP, I'd take a chance that something will be cobbled together or transition extended to allow movement of citizens from European countries to move around freely.
I know this isn't supposed to be a Brexit thread but personally I'm more concerned about nurses and other skilled workers taking planes out of Britain than holidaymakers.0 -

It cannot be anything other than a Brexit thread, since this is a Brexit issue.
If things turn out to be as bad as the scaremongering would have us believe, then we don't need to worry about a shortage of nurses, strawberry pickers, or baristas, as the Europeans who are here now won't be able to physically leave the country anyway. Lol.0 -
If people from the UK were restricted from flying to the rest of Europe, would Majorca,Ibiza etc survive without British holiday makers?and can you see the Spanish hoteliers standing by and watching there livelyhood go down the toilet.0

And would Irish Airline RyanAir survive?
On second thoughts, bring it on!0 -
At worst you could fly to a non EU country and from there to a EU contry.0

Everybody calls them but millions use them, people would not be able to fly so cheaply if RyanAir,Easyjet etc. stopped trading.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Nothing wrong with low cost airlines per se. But RyanAir has a reputation for treating passengers, staff, and airports unfairly.
Look at the ratings on https://www.airlinequality.com
RyanAir 5/10
EasyJet 6/10
Norwegian 6/10
Jet2 7/10
RyanAir were in the news again today. They have had a huge amount of delays and cancellations at Stansted this week. They are refusing to pay compensation (not for the first time) , claiming this is down to circumstances beyond their control; bad weather and ATC staff shortages. But the BBC did an analysis of Stansted departures showing other airlines were operating normally. Hmmmm.
I would rather pay more and travel with a decent airline.
Edit:
And for a lighthearted look at low cost airlines, have a look at Fascinating Aida's "Cheap Flights"

Quite surprised about Norwegian as those skandi countries always seem so very right on0
