Oil is checked on long journeys I have only done a couple anyway and the car is just over 3 months from last MOT service.
If the sump plug was loose or cross threaded and the engine was losing oil very slowly or it was burning a bit of oil then checking it a couple of times in just over 3 months means that you could easily have missed the level dropping.
Ideally, you should check your oil on a weekly basis. I know that there are a great many people (me included) who don't do this but it's generally what car manufacturers recommend and I would say that it's more important with a new purchase as you have no idea how much oil the engine is going to be consuming.0 -
Who ever suggested you should?
Neutral, ignition off, hazards on, glide left to the shoulder on the vast amount of momentum you've got.
Then have to control and stop that car with its huge amount of momentum possibly without the aid of servo assisted brakes and power steering.
I know that this can be done if you are expecting it but depending on which lane of the motorway the Op was in, I certainly wouldn't recommend that someone tries to coast a car with a dead engine across 1 or possibly 2 lanes that may have had other traffic in.0 -

It's the choice you have to make. The other alternative is sacrificing the engine.
I don't see it as a viable choice at all.
Sacrifice an engine which could be replaced or possibly repaired or risk the lives of the occupant/s of both your vehicle and any other vehicles that you may have to pull in front of whilst you might not have full control of your car.0 -
